In Nebraska, Warnings for the Liberty wing of the MassGOP

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Tue Jul 10, 2012 at 06:41:02 AM EDT

I have been very vocal about wanting to see the Massachusetts Republican Party embrace the liberty wing.  On the day of the Caucuses, I wrote a piece praising the Liberty Slate and imploring the party establishment to work with them.  Throughout the ensuing months the two sides seemingly have talked right past each other, with the establishment doing everything in their power to minimize the liberty folks.  What is happening in Nebraska, may be why the establishment has been so openly hostile.

In Nebraska the liberty wing has taken over the party apparatus, and the results have been controversial.  The party chairman is accused of using litmus tests for support of candidates.

We keep hearing about a "split" in the party and that everyone should "get along". But make no mistake: This is a plan by Ron Paul to take over the Nebraska party in order to help him at the convention, then eventually elect his son President.

In the meantime, they jeopardize Nebraska's effort to elect Deb Fischer, to give Republicans control of the U.S. Senate and get rid of ObamaCare, among other things. They jeopardize the election of Mitt Romney - to end the debacle that has been the Obama Presidency.

They pull along a few long time Republicans who see this as their chance at some power in the party, or maybe to settle old scores. And you can bet, of course, that Democrats are kicking back chuckling in their Birkenstocks. (Enjoy that chuckle while you can.)

This is of course one person's opinion in Nebraska, a member of the establishment.  But there are parallels here in Massachusetts.  The Liberty Caucus in Massachusetts would do well to keep the face of the Movement Evan Kenney and Carol Claros, both of whom gave passionate speeches about why defeating Barack Obama is priority one of the movement.  They are both young and the future of our party.

Our established party leadership should look to work with these people, not marginalize them.  They are the future of the party, not the past.

I very much appreciate your attention to the matter of fairness and rules within the republican party. The GOP is the undisputed choice for liberty and the Constitution.

Here's the problem, Rob (4.00 / 1)
For every Brad Wyatt, there are two Iron Mikes.

As you know, I have long advocated working with Liberty activists, even though I have issues with some of their ideas.  At least they are concerned with government, privacy and spending as opposed to social conservatives who are mainly interested in imposing their personal morality on others.

But unless they repudiate some of their adherents who are abusive and potentially dangerous (I once had a minor threatening physical encounter with one), they will not gain any credibility as the rogue members overshadow the serious ones.

Peter,

Sadly you are correct about the social/persuasion skills of a small minority of Liberty activists, who intentionally or unintentionally, lob bombs at every opportunity, rather than looking to build bridges.  I will say, that after being elected delegates, many Liberty activists privately told me they were so excited to feel like they were part of the GOP, and their perspective was totally changed from hostile and defensive to relaxed and open.

BTW, I used to do drive around the state and put on a training, I called Ambassadors for Liberty, to try to reduce the friction.  Haven't had one of those in over a year.  It's been a busy year.

No doubt, time to restart that Ambassadors program, and not to make excuses, but I suspect other movements have zealous activists that also step over the line.

I don't think that (0.00 / 0)
is a problem regulated to just the liberty activists, or even the GOP.  Every political group has it's fringe.  Dems sure have their thugs.

It's our duty to make it clear that sort of behavior is counter productive and unacceptable.
