RIP GOP State Committeeman John MacMillan II

by: The Angelic One

Tue Aug 07, 2012 at 10:30:04 AM EDT

I'm saddened to learn today that Republican State Committeeman John MacMillan II of Billerica died this past Saturday at the Bedford Veterans Administration Hospital. A veteran of both the US Air Force & the Massachusetts Air National Guard, he & his wife Sandy were activists in the best sense of the word. MacMillan was a longtime chairman of the Billerica GOP Town Committee as well as an active member of the Massachusetts Republican State Committee. He not only talked the talk, he walked the walk. MacMillan was a mentor for countless GOP activists (notably State Representative Marc Lombardo whom MacMillan supported at the very outset of his political career when Lombardo ran for & won his seat as a Selectman in Billerica). He was a loyal friend & a faithful conservative. May he rest in peace.

This is a huge loss. Learned about it from CLT on Monday. (0.00 / 0)
Billerica is a conservative stronghold in part because of John's work there. RIP.

Job well done, good and faithful servant. (0.00 / 0)
John was tremendous activist and great State Committeeman.  Due to the unfortunate circumstances of geography, I didn't know him as well as a good many others but I had known him long enough, I'd at least a dozen years, and in that time he became a barometer for me on the issues and activism.

John was inspirational and motivational back when I was barely out of my teens and a later as a colleague he was someone who's counsel I always took into the strongest of considerations.  When voting, I knew if we were on opposite sides then I had seriously be confident of my convictions because his were certainly rock solid, and usually correct.  He was a rock of conservatism.

I knew he was ill but I was shocked when I received the email notifying me of his passing.  Although "all he way up" in Billerica, he was known well down here to Republican activists in the SouthCoast.

My only regret is that I never had the opportunity to spend time with and know him like so many others who mourn deeply at his passing.

I'm sure John is indeed in a far, far better place...one where his years of activism are being rewarded and here he can rest, assured that his life of good work and tending the fields on behalf of the cause is now sprouting up all across the Commonwealth.

John A. MacMillan II - Mar 20, 1943 - Aug 4, 2012

http://cltg.org/cltg/clt2012/1...

We've lost one of our great activists over the weekend, John MacMillan of Billerica.

John was there when I first became an activist in 1985, helping me start up the first mandatory seat belt law repeal ballot committee when I was a novice. John knew computers when I was just a rookie feeling my way around.

John was there, helping to organize petition drives.

John helped pull off every one we did, successfully.

Back then, I'm told, John MacMillan was also active with Citizens for Limited Taxation, with which I eventually merged my Freedom First organization. John was always there, always.

Barbara and I recently visited him at the VA hospital in Bedford. I had the honor of rolling him out in his wheelchair for a cigarette in the outside smoking area. I had a feeling this might be the last time I'd see him.

John passed away this past weekend.

Thank you, John, for all you did for us taxpayers and citizens. I only wish you lived long enough to see the outcome of the upcoming November elections.

Sandy, stay strong. You married a strong and committed man.
