Amateur hour continues at the Warren Campaign

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Tue Aug 07, 2012 at 14:49:32 PM EDT

Whomever is running Elizabeth Warren's floundering campaign for U.S. Senate, please keep it up. The latest fail from Team Warren comes as, echoing the national drumbeat for Romney to do so, called on Scott Brown to release more tax returns.  The only problem... He's released six years, and she's only released four. She then backed off. Boston.com, has the story:

Elizabeth Warren demanded Monday that Senator Scott Brown release more of his tax returns. The only problem was that Brown, her Republican rival, had already released six years of tax returns while Warren has refused to release more than four years of her filings.

Asked to reconcile that apparent conflict, Warren backed off her demand, saying today that six years was enough. She did not, however, offer to release any more of her IRS filings.

Time to break out the old Etch-a-Sketch:

Seriously Doug Rubin needs to keep this up.  Please, pretty please...

Actually, Scott has yet to relase any tax returns. (5.00 / 1)
Elizabeth Warren's are here:
http://elizabethwarren.com/ass...

What Scott did was allow some of the press to glance at his returns under stringent conditions.
http://bostonherald.com/news/u...

Brown, who urged Warren to be more transparent, refused to allow copies of the tax information to leave the office and instead required reporters to review his tax returns at his headquarters and take notes. The campaign did not allow tax attorneys to come in and view the returns.

You're right Patrick. She did a great job back there! (0.00 / 0)

by the last comment, re great job.  What Scott did was totally legit.  WHY should they have access to circulate to anyone and everyone such private information.  They got their look.  As to Lizzy's, haven't checked the link yet.  Anyone have any noteworthy comments?

I was being sarcastic towards Patrick. (0.00 / 0)
Patrick is slowly being brainwashed by the clowns on BlueMassGroup.  Every time Warren "steps in it" Patrick runs over to BMG, gets his notes, runs back over here and pastes them to this blog.

I just like to give Patrick the cold slap of reality that he doesn't get on BMG.  Example ... Brown and Warren are BOTH hiding something.  Brown's 6 years' worth of tax info can't leave his office ... Warren refuses to cough up more than 4 years' worth of info.  The fact that Brown won't allow his tax info to leave his office doesn't cancel out the fact that Warren put her fricken foot in her mouth ... again.

This process will play out several times between now and the election.  Warren says something stupid so Patrick slides down his fire pole and man's his battle station armed to the teeth with URLs and BMG spin designed to distract people from Warren making foolish statements in public.

That's why I said "You're right Patrick, she did a great job back there." : )

He doesn't have to release anything. (0.00 / 0)
But when he says he is going to release them then I expect him to release them.  What he did was not a release by any stretch.

And there is also a thing called transparency.

Neither completely released anything (5.00 / 1)
Warren has a couple of pages of the tax return linked in PDF; Brown allowed reporters a chance to look at tax returns.

Neither Brown nor Warren want tax attorneys scrutinizing their tax positions. For example, in the linked Warren 1040, I see she has self-employment income but there's no Schedule C in the PDF.  Maybe she's a tax cheat on her self employment income with bogus business deductions.  Who knows.

Both released tax returns; neither released complete tax returns.

The first page is a summary. (0.00 / 0)
The following pages contain the returns jointly filed be her and her husband. Go ask for her schedule C.  Brown provided no Schedule anything at all.  He certainly didn't provide his wife's returns even to the reporter, which in light of his STOCK Act, he certainly should have.

Paradox (0.00 / 0)
The first page is a summary, true.

The following pages contain 2 pages of each year of federal tax returns but the complete tax return is probably 7-10 pages.  Those other pages, if unfiled, would constitute an incomplete return in the eyes of the IRS.

The paradox is that you say she released the returns, yet admonish me to "ask for her schedule C", the proper name of which is the 1040, Schedule C:  she didn't release it and you know this because I'm supposed to ask her for it.

Warren released a few pages, for all eyes to see.

Brown released perhaps a few pages, perhaps more, for certain eyes to see and report on for a while.

Both incompletely released tax returns.  Who cares.

It's not the same. (0.00 / 0)
She released much more than Scott Brown did.  To say they are both incomplete is inaccurate.

tax returns (0.00 / 0)
From Ms. Warren's tax returns, let me know how much she claimed for real estate tax deduction, or how much in charitable donations, or state income tax deductions or mortgage interest.

Or, check this out:  In 2008 she claimed itemized deductions of $69,485.  Then, on the summary page, she says she had $26K of charity and about $35K-$43K of income tax. But, if she deducted $65K of charity + income tax, that pretty much explains the entire itemized deduction.   She doesn't pay or deduct real estate tax?! Tax on 24 Linnaean, Cambridge must be high, no?

Mortgage interest? We know there's a mortgage, at least there's one recorded for Mann/Warren, recorded in 2007 by BOA for $1,320,000 and not yet released.

Questions regarding the correct treatment of the moving expenses she claimed are more technically challenging and we'll never understand because she didn't release the Moving Expense form 3903.

She/they paid no alt min tax in 2010; wonder if she even did a calculation?  What changed to cause her to pay it in 2011.  Can't tell; she didn't release the Alt min form.

In some years, she claimed all her interest income as "Mass Bank Interest" thereby subjecting it to a sligtly lower state tax rate, but because she didn't release Schedule B, we have no idea if, in fact, all interest was in Mass banks.  You mean to say a sophisticated, finance oriented Harvard professor doesn't practice some diversification with money deposits?  Suddenly, in 2011 tax return, the Mass Bank Interest disappears. Go figure.

Looks like she claimed a credit for other jurisdiction income taxes paid.  Maybe DC.  Wonder why that DC tax return wasn't released?

2011, "personal property rental" of $8666?  What's that?

On all returns, the mysterious self-employment income-not royalty income because that should be on Schedule E, which also wasn't released.

Certainly, the IRS would not consider this redacted PDF a complete tax return. YMMV.

If you notice in the Herald article reporting details of the Brown tax return, the tax returns reviewed appear to be complete.

It's pretty darn clear:  she partially published selected pages from her tax returns; Brown completely published his, apparently in total, but temporarily.  How you can conclude that either completely released his/her tax return is rather pig-headedly wrong.

National news (0.00 / 0)
The quick about-face drew the attention of Politico:

http://www.politico.com/news/s...

Liz was hoping to benefit from the media double standard which allows Harry Reid to demand the release of Mitt's tax returns while withholding his own.  Transparency for thee but not for me.

I won't be happy until I see the phrase, "national joke" in a story about Warren, but one step at a time.
