If you've donated to John Kerry, you're basically paying these kids $550K
According to ethics laws, employees of the Senate earning more than $119,554 a year aren't allowed to take in more than $26,955 in outside salaries. The law is to prevent high-level staffers from spending all their time on the campaign trail instead of doing the people's work, said Snedeker.
But Wade found a way around the ethics law, cutting his Senate office hours in 2011, and earning only $97,000. He then made $181,000 from Kerry's U.S. Senate campaign committee and $25,000 from Kerry's leadership PAC Campaign for Country, according to his financial disclosure forms.
"I've looked at thousands of these disclosures myself, and I don't see anything legally wrong here, but it does raise questions about whether it rubs against the restraints of the ethics law," said Snedeker, who called the $303,000 payout "unusual."
Andrew O'Brien also took home two salaries in 2010, earning a combined $250,000 income, he said.

4. Taj Mahal of State Hospitals opens at cost of $943,750 per bed
Now look, serving the Mental ill with State Hospitals is one of the few real functions of government. Those people with mental illnesses that make it unable for them to function in daily life at any level are truly worthy of help. But, do we have to spend almost a third of a billion dollars to do so? Did a hospital really have to cost $302M dollars. Especially seeing that it only has 320 beds. That's right the new Worcester State Hospital opens today, at a price tag of $943,750 per bed. The Boston Globe has the story:
Yet within this $302 million structure, there is clearly a soberness of purpose. The ceiling light fixtures lack any parts that could be used to help residents hang themselves. The lights' on-off switches are partly covered to avoid deliberate electrocution. The walls are made of a high-impact material to absorb fist-pounding and kicking.
This is the Worcester Recovery Center and Hospital, a state-of-the-art facility designed to care for the most severely mentally ill patients who are not yet ready to be treated in a community setting, the longtime trend in psychiatric care.
The 320-bed hospital will take in the patients displaced from a Worcester facility that is being closed and a partially shuttered Taunton hospital. The new complex will treat nearly half of 670 psychiatric patients across the state needing long-term hospitalization. In the mid-1950s, the state's network of about a dozen psychiatric hospitals housed nearly 23,000 patients.
