Five Things you should know today, August 28, 2012

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

1. "Know-Nothing" Eagan Strikes again

In today's Boston Herald Margery Eagan attacks, the Cardinal many people think will be on the short list to be the next Pope.

But it's unclear which Catholics will be swayed by New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan's delivering of the Republican convention's closing prayer Thursday after Romney speaks.

Pro-pedophile. Anti-poor. That's the rap on Dolan, also president of the U.S. Conference of Bishops. Progressive Catholics are complaining about Paul Ryan's pro-rich, slash-the-safety-net ideas. Clergy abuse survivor groups say Dolan still covers up for abusive priests.

Dolan is the leader of the Catholic Church in America.  He is the head of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.  He also offered to say the closing prayer at the DNC.  Marjorie, your "know nothingness" is showing.

2. Evan Kenney's update from Tampa

I received an update from Evan Kenney via email yesterday.  He summed up his trip to Tampa so far.

I've never met so many important people in my entire life, and it's only been a weekend! I've also never seen so much media, especially media that want to hear from me.

I've spoken with Fox News, CBS, NPR, among others this weekend.

I've met Kerry Healey, Brad Jones, Doug Wead, Dr. Ron Paul, Jesse Benton, Howie Carr, Wolf Blitzer, Jon Keller, and Michael Steele, among others, in the past few days.

I haven't failed to show my youthful ignorance, however. Monday morning, I showed up, in a "Tribe Called Quest" T-shirt, to what I thought was just a continental breakfast at the Marriott.

Well, I must have missed a memo. It was a Mass GOP breakfast at which attendees were very well dressed in front of cameras.

Oops.

The media loved it, though. It turned out to be a great message. I told NPR that I might be the first Republican to ever own a Tribe Called Quest shirt, but that fact alone goes a long way to prove that the Republican party is changing not only in Massachusetts, but also across the country. The Republican Oath represents so much more than Mitt Romney or Ron Paul, and my presence alone in Tampa, as the youngest delegate from Massachusetts, is great evidence that our tent is growing progressively bigger.

3. What is a "vote buyer's list"?

OCPF reports can be interesting things to read.  Especially the one for Donald Bourque, who is challenging Ryan Fattman.  You see Bourque lists an expenditure for $1000 to the Massachusetts Democratic Party.  What was the expenditure for?

A "vote buyer's list"!  What in the world is a "vote buyer's list"?  Does the Massachusetts Democratic Party have some sort of list of the people you can give walking around money to?  If so why are they charging for it?

4. Lowell Sun picks up on leftist leanings of Lowell's "independent" mayor

The Lowell Sun picked up on the left leaning tendencies of Lowell's "independent mayor".

"They're trying to counter Scott's endorsements from Democrats and real independents by saying they have an independent voice, but the guy is to the left of her," said Robert Eno, who owns Red Mass Group, the blog in question. "The only reason he's an independent is because the Democratic party isn't left enough for him."

A Red Mass Group post published Sunday highlights several positions Murphy took during his 2007 run for Congress in the 5th District special election won by Niki Tsongas. During that race, Murphy advocated for a single-payer health-care system, enacting a temporary tax on all Americans any time Congress votes to declare war, and lifting the cap on Social Security payroll taxes.

The best part is Murphy's defense of his positions:

Murphy said Monday his views are nuanced and do not fit neatly into liberal or conservative boxes. For example, he said a single-payer health-care system could encourage entrepreneurship and risk-taking -- principles Republicans often extol.

"When you look at a number of these different issues and how I've approached them, they can't be simply charted like normal political beliefs on a line from blue to red," said Murphy.

Apparently, socialized medicine is a GOP position now.

Ugh! (4.00 / 1)
The Republican Oath represents so much more than Mitt Romney or Ron Paul

Here is yet another delegate who just doesn't get that he is there to support Mitt Romney above all else. That is the whole point of the event. The above quote, establishing equivalence between Paul and Romney, is outrageous.

EARTH TO THE KID WHO CALLED THE MASSGOP CORRUPT ON NATIONAL TELEVISION: the primary reason you are there is your oath to nominate Mitt Romney. Ron Paul, who didn't even get any Massachusetts Delegates, should be the furthest thing from your mind, as a delegate.

If you want to be a Paul supporter - that's great. I have no problem with that and I respect many of his views. But we have a nominee now. Heck, I preferred Huntsman over Romney during the primary. But you are now there to represent us and nominate MITT ROMNEY with enthusiasm. If I were a delegate, I would have almost nothing to say about Huntsman other than the fact that he, unlike your leader, has endorsed the nominee. If you want to get some respect from the Republican party - do us all a favor and stop talking about Ron Paul.

And if Rachel Maddow - currently trashing the party and the convention - wants a follow-up interview with you, please say no.

The conventions may have become (5.00 / 1)
an infomercial for the candidate, but that isn't the only thing they should be about.  I don't get you Ed, you attack people for not saying they are a Republican instead of conservative.  This kid goes OUT OF HIS way to say that his party and ideas mean more than any single candidate, and you attack him.

The conventions should be about a vigorous debate on ideas.  They've become too damn bland.

I agree (0.00 / 0)
Rob -

In the Internet age, it is not clear what the conventions should be. I would love it if they were a debate about ideas. The party platform, drafted at the convention behind closed doors, clearly shows that it is not.

I don't mind that Evan thinks the party is more important than a candidate. I think he's right!

But, as a delegate, he was chosen to play a very specific part in this big freaking infomercial. He doesn't seem to want to play that part, and that is a bad thing.

If, after the convention, he wants to work to change the Republican party and how it operates, that is fantastic, and I would support that effort. But, damn it - will he actually act like a delegate as he is supposed to? If he just wanted to attend on behalf of RMG on a press pass and not endorse Romney, that would have been fine.

Here's an acid test question for Evan and the other Paul delegates:

If Americans Elect drafts Ron Paul to appear on their ballot (which is on the ballot in all 50 states and Paul did get the largest number of write-in votes) and Paul actually runs - will you vote for Ron Paul, which will harm Romney's chances, or will you vote for Romney over Paul?

Any real Republican would answer in a heartbeat that they could not support a third-party candidacy from the right that would probably ensure that Romney would lose. I am pretty sure that Evan would vote for Paul. But if he wants to come out and, as a Republican, endorse Romney and say he wouldn't support Paul on a third-party ticket, I would love to hear that.

No as a delegate (0.00 / 0)
he was elected to nominate the president and affect the platform.  Which the liberty delegates did, very much.

They were pretty up front when they ran that they would support Mitt, but work to get platform planks.

In addition (0.00 / 0)
RON PAUL is not running as an independent.  This run was to keep the movement alive for his son.  His son has a speaking slot, they got platform planks.  This was a successful run.

Oh and did you see there's a "mystery speaker" on Thursday night. I'm taking bets on that being Paul.

It was a clarifying hypothetical (0.00 / 0)
Rob -

These people keep trying to tell us they are loyal Republicans. My hypothetical question gets right at the issue. I would think almost all people who consider themselves loyal Republicans would not vote for a right-wing third-party candidacy that would hurt Romney's chances, even if they didn't like Romney.

So, I like Huntsman a lot more than Romney on many issues. However, if he ran on some sort of unity ticket, I would not support it. I would feel bad about the whole thing, but the party comes first.

I think the Paul people who I saw at the Sun Dome yesterday would vote for a third-party candidate Paul in a heartbeat. Would all of our delegates? I think not. And that is unacceptable in our representatives at the convention, regardless if it is somehow within the letter of the law.

[ Parent ]
So you would vote for (5.00 / 1)
a tax and spend liberal that just put an R after their name over a committed conservative?  Blind party allegiance got us the overspending big-government policies of George Bush.

If Mitt Romney follows in that model, I will be his most vocal critic.  Regardless of the party label. I'm a Republican, but it's not a suicide pact for our country.

A question of the default position (0.00 / 0)
Rob -

I don't believe in blind loyalty. For instance, if Cain got the nomination I would not vote for him. I would just not cast a ballot for president. I would help with down-ballot races instead.

My point is that Republicans' default position should be the party, with exceptions when they arise. I think the Paul people's default position is Paul. I don't like that in a Republican and it is unacceptable in a delegate.

as im on road i cant link but go to redstate (0.00 / 0)
And see the floor fight between Ginsburg and the grassroots.  The establishment just overplayed its hand.

I think we would agree on this... (0.00 / 0)
... the entire party/delegate/platform/convention model is outdated, ineffective, unnecessary, unfairly favors some groups over others, and limits broader participation in the party.

In light of Internet technologies,  party structure and operations must change. Conventions should be online with a two-day in-person gathering. The platform should be a mix of crowd sourcing and input from appointees. Party activities should move from back rooms to online, mostly-public collaboration spaces. I could go on and on.

Americans Elect failed to find candidates but they built a lot of the infrastructure to do this. There are other pieces out there, and security, identification, and voting could be handled with things like Helios.

Let's all resolve to make that online convention happen in four years and then it won't matter what the rules people in the party try to do for 2016. Ok? :-)

1) Egan (0.00 / 0)
is a mental lightweight with an anti-Catholic fervor.  Little Catholic girl turned away from the Church....nothing more.

2)  What a dumbass.  Evan....YOU ARE REPRESENTING THE GOP CONTINGENT FROM MASSACHUSETTS.  Thusly, thou shalt not wear a friggin t-shirt outside your room.  This is like the idiot that showed up to a job interview with me with a Harvard diploma in hand and wearing a t-shirt....short interview...lasted as long as it took to shake his hand and invite him to the door.  Ya just don't do it.  This is like those girls that went to the White House wearing flip-flops....I do't care who the President is...ya just don't do it.

It's called respect....learning that what you're doing isn't about YOU no matter how much of a Rachel rock star you are.

C)  Sounds like vote-buying money.....probably to get the bum vote.

4)  The lad from Lowell is a socialist loon.

....he said a single-payer health-care system could encourage entrepreneurship and risk-taking -- principles Republicans often extol.

Really??  This is like the resident dishonorable liar saying that raising taxes on a business encourages them to hire people they don't need to hire to conduct their business.

5)  I got nothing.  Have a great time, folks!!

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

Margery is just getting desperate at this point (5.00 / 2)
Her breathless polemics against the church keep escalating to the point now where I just read them as a cry for help.

I use to just think of her as being "Castle Irish", someone willing to sell out the church to win the favor of an anti-church elite, but now I'm convinced its a lot more than that. I'd continue to dig deeper, but even after this outrageous No-Knothing garbage, I'm not sure she quite deserves that.

Margery, just know the light is always on for you. Always willing to accept people with whatever scars and troubles they have. End your misery and hate and just come home.
