Five things you should know today August 31, 2012

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

1. Mitt Romney gave a great speech.

I can't actually find the whole video.  But here is what I can find.  If you missed it here's some.

2. What was that?

Maybe they should have had that Reagan hologram.  What in the world was that Eastwood speech. We went from Gran Torino to that in four or so years?  I ended watching that speech feeling bad for Clint.

3. Progressives are in full panic mode

Progressives are in such a full panic mode about this election, that they are lying about others not lying.  Then saying those people are.  Case in point?  Three short paragraphs from Paul Ryan's speech regarding the General Motor's plant in his hometown.  Here are the paragraphs as delivered.

President Barack Obama came to office during an economic crisis, as he has reminded us a time or two.  Those were very tough days, and any fair measure of his record has to take that into account.  My home state voted for President Obama. When he talked about change, many people liked the sound of it, especially in Janesville, where we were about to lose a major factory.

A lot of guys I went to high school with worked at that GM plant. Right there at that plant, candidate Obama said: "I believe that if our government is there to support you ... this plant will be here for another hundred years."  That's what he said in 2008.

Well, as it turned out, that plant didn't last another year.  It is locked up and empty to this day.  And that's how it is in so many towns today, where the recovery that was promised is nowhere in sight.

You'll see he first said the plant was closing during the Bush Administration, second said Obama promised he would save it, and three it closed a year later.  All three of these things are demonstrably true.

Of course that doesn't stop our friends over in blue land from claiming otherwise.

It's sad really.

4. He's a Fightah

Last week Elizabeth Warren toured Arthur Ramahlo's West End Gym in Lowell.  For those that don't know that is where World Champion Irish Micky Ward trained.  Warren met with Ramahlo, and Dicky Ecklund, Micky's brother.  She then sent out a fundraising appeal entitled "Fighter".  The only problem?  She only got the endorsement of the socialist mayor of Lowell, Patrick Murphy at that event, not that of Micky Ward.

Today Scott Brown will receive the endorsement of the Fighter himself, Micky Ward.  It makes this native Lowellian proud.

5. Sixty Seven Days

There are sixty seven days left until the election.  Have you blocked off time to call, or go door to door for Scott Brown or another GOP candidate this year.  The unions, and "communtiy organizers" will be illegally coordinating with the Democrats like they do every year, and will have people out in full force.  We need to match them person for person.

Dedicate some time today.

Clint Eastwood was having fun (5.00 / 1)
I know what you are saying, I cringed too, but...it occurred to me that sometimes people who are very successful still have little unfulfilled fantasies just like the rest of us. Tom Stemberg, despite being CEO of one of the nation's great companies, clearly always wanted to be a political activist like us, giving a political speech at a convention. Clint Eastwood, one of the best-known actors in the world, usually playing very tough serious roles, always wanted to be a stand-up comedian; and he had his chance. Good for him.

Clint Eastwood speech (0.00 / 0)
All tongue-in-cheek with a lot of serious in the mix.

Micky Ward's a Fighter, but not endorsing Brown (4.00 / 1)

http://blogs.lowellsun.com/the...

By way of context, the mayor of Lowell, who's not at all a socialist, was the first politician to ever get Ward's endorsement.  And that's because Murphy was a fighter, too, and won a couple of Irish national titles when he went to school over there.  I know that because I was a boxer also and would go running with Micky when I was younger.  I had no tougher opponent in the ring than my twin brother, Patrick.  Sorry to rain on yr parade.  I'm as proud as ever to be a native Lowellian.

Dan Murphy

Will he endorse Warren? (0.00 / 0)

A Cleverly Crafted Speech (0.00 / 0)
The thing I noticed about Romney's speech is that it is full of self-contained sound bites, like raisins in a pudding, just waiting to be pulled out and put on the Internet to go viral.

Clint Eastwood channeled Andy Kaufman. (0.00 / 0)
The whole appearance was designed to spark a "Watch old man Clint lose his mind!" meme and go viral.  In an otherwise painfully scripted convention, many will find his performance the only thing worth watching.  The Romney camp will eventually realize that an 82 year old just schooled them on the realities of campaigning in today's media.

Clint also gave his fellow libertarians a surprise when he got the convention to laugh at the futility of the War in Afghanistan and cheer for withdrawing our troops "tomorrow."  Speaking to a convention so afraid of Ron Paul that his name couldn't be spoken (even Rand had to call him "my grandfather's son"), you have to love what he did there.  And so would have Andy Kaufman.

Is that what Eastwood meant on Afghanistan? (0.00 / 0)
I thought he was criticizing only that Obama wanted to go in but now isn't willing to see the war through to a successful end.  And if we aren't in it to win it, then the timetable is a joke. Why leave later rather than right now?  That's how I understood him.

If Eastwood is against the war than how does that square with Romney's position?  Romney doesn't appear to support a withdrawal.

He's at odds with Romney on the issue. (4.00 / 1)
From a 2011 interview:

He was opposed to the war in Iraq.

"I didn't understand why we invaded, and I still don't. It's the same with Afghanistan. I want the troops from Great Britain and the U.S. to be successful, but by the same token Afghanistan has always been a screw-up. The Russians, who live right next door, couldn't prevail there, so what are we doing?"

Speaking of Clint, some Convention after thoughts: (0.00 / 0)
Never thought Eastwood was a great tough guy actor as the 357 magnum was what personified the role, however I admire his brillances even more post-convention.

As a point of interest, the three current leaders in video hits from the RNC were Romney with 70k, Ryan with 250k and Eastwood with over 1,500K and climbing.

Clint's directing skills setting up his skit were impeccable, bumbling through his opening words like an aging man going senile such that we would be cringing in our seats and praying that he could construe some sort of logical sentence while delivering one poignant and profound subliminal message after another, all disguised as comedic spoofs. He brought it all home in a cresendo playing with the Convention audience to complete his trademark closing, "Go ahead, __ _ __! And you know everyone viewing at home did the same.

In fact as I set my chair outside yesterday (as did many of my neighbors), I came to realize that he had delivered the most memorable reason (I had always felt) for any undecided voter to retire Obama and go with Romney; the Lawyer vs. Businessman logic! Eastwood delivered that message perfectly.

I also was proudly reassured of the Class within our party as I reflect on the speeches delivered by Condi, Ann, Kerry, the Reagans, the Bushes. et all. In fact, I am prouder then ever to be a lifetime member of the Republican party!

Though there are many other memories I'll carry with me towards November and probably throughout my life, I was extremely impressed with how well this massive event was orchestrated and in the end, under immense pressure, Romney delivered!

I am even more convinced that even though Paul Ryan is the most qualified man for the current needs of the VP Job, Rubio would of brought home more votes and he left no doubt in my mind that someday he will ALSO be one of our future Presidents of the United States!
