About that marathon

by: gary

Sun Sep 02, 2012 at 20:04:03 PM EDT

Seems that Mr. Ryan claims he ran sub 3 hours in the marathon when in fact it was 4 hours.  As a result, the partisans are excoriating him here and here and well, whereever democrat politics are.

And fortunately for him, he's quickly (upon discovery) admitted the fabrication.

But why did he say it in the first place?  Because the simplist answer is probably the right one, here's why.

As preface, I've been involved in aspects of running and racing for nearly 35 years; know where to look for practically anyone's recent result and know bullshit when I hear it.  And frankly, as soon as I heard Ryan sub 3 and that he claims he could run 10 miles but not a marathon I couldn't help myself but question it and check coolrunning.com and athlinks.com and I couldn't find him.

Scott Douglas has much more data and probably more tenacity at his disposal and found Ryan's result as a 20 year old at 4 hours +.

4 hours sucks, that is, if you're a 20 year old and you actually trained.

And here, IMHO, is what happened.  He was athletic and jumped into the marathon ill prepared and crashed and burned.  Seems he didn't go back to the 26.2 mile race either. Lesson learned.

So here we are 20 years later and whenever someone asks "did you ever run a marathon?" the follow-up questions are:  (1) how fast and (2) did you ever run boston.  Happens everytime.

So what went through Paul's head when asked?

gary :: About that marathon
Here's what happened:  the same thing that happens whenever any runner is ask.  Runners lie.  Don't ask me why, but they just do.

Not the top tier guys but the weekend warriors, the 3 hour, 4 hour marathoner. The guys that run 20 minute 5Ks.  They lie, or maybe exaggerate.  Regardless, try it out: find someone who ran a marathon and ask their time.

There was this guy I knew in grad school.  He was a decent and dedicated runner, a professor.  He went to Marine Corp marathon and cranked a 2:48.  Bullshit.  When called on it, he refused to acknowledge that somehow, someway he'd accidently cut the course. He never ran another marathon because he knew he couldn't hit the 2:48 again. Liar, but not a bad guy.  Something just takes hold of the male ego to cause them to lie about athletic performance.

I could give dozens of similar examples.

So them Ryan was asked.  It appears that he doesn't really know much about the marathon and figured that he'd get away with claiming a 3 when it was actually a 4.  He didn't know that the difference was substantial. His bad.

It was a lie and if the job of the president was to run a decent marathon, I'd not vote for him. As it is, it's irrelevant and I'm happy to know I'll kick his ass in a roadrace. Honest!

Maybe it had become "family lore" (5.00 / 1)
His parents might have told his kids that he ran marathons in under three hours, and it became family lore. They looked at his pictures with those high leg bones and thought he looked fast, and so he didn't want to call his parents liars, so he repeated family lore. If he feels he's a three-hour marathoner, then by golly he's a three hour marathoner! Are they questioning his qualifications? Charles Fried  never mentioned his marathon time to anyone, so what's the problem?

He lied. (0.00 / 0)
Paul Ryan must be stripped of any titles or medals that he won.

Former (0.00 / 0)
marathon runner here....never lied about my times....never trained either.

I have no clue what my 1991 "real" time was...Honolulu.  Started about a mile back from the starting line...took 15-ish minutes after the gun to get to the start line...stress fracture and torn ligament at the 17th mile...beers at the 23rd mile...finished 4:13-something...2,480th out of 30,000+......without ever training or running further than 12 miles.  Straight to the medical tent...
No clue what my 1992 time was...never picked up my finish certificate....but I seem to remember something around 3:20....asked the Association at some point and know it wasn't sub3.

Used to run 10k's in the 31-33 min in my youth.  Best 2-mile on the APFT was 9:36...it was a exceptional morning.  Typically ran it from 10:18 to 10:36.....helps that I have the records to check.

I don't understand why people lie about this stuff.....or fishing.

I doubt he was lying (0.00 / 0)
I doubt he heard the question and thought, "well, I know my real time was over four hours, but I'm going to tell everyone that it was under three hours, because that's more impressive." My "family lore" comment above is only half joking, I bet it had become family lore. He knew he was a fast runner, faster than his time indicated. Perhaps on that race he had a problem like a stress fracture, and in his mind he adjusted what he "could have" done, if he'd been healthy, based on practice runs. Kind of like the kid in The Squid and The Whale who tried to pass of Pink Floyd's "Hey You" as his own composition, and told the school guidance councillor he did because he felt that he "could have, so the fact that it was already written was kind of a technicality."

meh - I fabricate my golf score (0.00 / 0)
and sometimes my ability to pick up chicks!  Like that time I said I was at a bar and like 5 chicks totally started coming on to me ... well that was a lie, it was like 4 chicks!

JohnD from BlueMassGroup explains this situation well . . . (0.00 / 0)
He misspoke and has admitted it.

"The race was more than 20 years ago, but my brother Tobin - who ran Boston last year - reminds me that he is the owner of the fastest marathon in the family and has never himself ran a sub-three. If I were to do any rounding, it would certainly be to four hours, not three. He gave me a good ribbing over this at dinner tonight."

They should have asked him how many women he had sex with in college since nobody has ever exaggerated that number? Or how big that fish was...

Ryan should never had answered and told him he'd get back to him, but he didn't.

This will be good fodder for you guys (and you guys only). But you are also part of the problem as you stick the "LIAR" tag on someone who makes a mistake of something that happened 20 years ago. I know your tribalism will compel you to be mean spirited but if we call any pol who makes a small insignificant mistake on 20 year old events, then we may as well call them all LIARS...

Warren had boasted to the National Journal that Wall Street executives have told her: "I want to support your campaign because you will save capitalism."
