Mary Z. Connaughton on NECN's Broadside

You guys have to watch this.  Talking about the GOP's "gender gap." Interview starts about two minutes in - Mary Z. takes Jim Braude to school!

She makes a great point: here in Mass., the pro-life movement isn't the reason for GOP losses - Tisei, Brown and in 2010, Charlie Baker, were all pro-CHOICE. Still, it's time for the GOP to start figuring out how to appeal to more women- Mary mentions the sad fact that tens of thousands of kids in big Democrat strongholds like Lowell, Lynn, Worcester, Lawrence, Springfield and so many other cities, are stuck in failing public schools. The GOP has a huge opportunity to go into those cities and win those moms over to our side because the GOP supports school choice and accountability - and ALL moms want the best for their kids.  Right on, Mary!

Yes, it's true they are all prochoice. (0.00 / 0)
As I mentioned before about Brown, it didn't help him that he kept having to apologize for other members of his party and their position on rape.  That position is the prolife position that there should be no exceptions for rape or incest.  It's a politically unpalatable position.

Can't let opponents frame the debate (0.00 / 0)
No question Akin and Mourdock were a gift to the Dems. Probably 99.9% of principled, pro-life folks support exceptions in the case of rape, health, incest, etc. but these two clowns' extreme positions were manipulated by the Dems, blown up, and used effectively to hurt the whole party.

That could mean that the GOP should change its platform - or it could mean that GOP candidates need to get better at framing the debate and not letting themselves get defined by their opponents.

Here in Mass., we can just throw our hands up and concede that there's simply no chance someone with an R next to his or her name can win statewide office unless it's a fluke like Jan. 2010.

But, a more hopeful message, and one that seems to me to have merit, is the one that Mary gave - that we need to put some more substantive policies together, ones that will have broad appeal, and go out and market them, and do the work of talking to voters rather than letting the other party take them for granted.

There are more than a few prolife Catholics on RMG.  How many support legal exceptions?

to imply that the pro-life stance nationally is the reason why the GOP has no future in Mass., I respectfully disagree. I think the election results here probably have little to do with Todd Akin - and a lot to do with the rising number of people who now benefit from expansive government programs. That presents the same challenge for the GOP - to frame the debate, put some more substantive policy ideas and proposals on the table and go out and market them.
