Five Things You Should Know Today, January 3, 2012

1. Jones Elected Minority Leader

In a closed door caucus, Brad Jones (R-North Reading) was re-elected Minority Leader of the Massachusetts House of Representatives.   Sources say that, unlike prior years, the vote was taken by roll call, not by secret ballot.

2. Two Special Elections Set

Two special elections have been set for early in 2013.  Both have been scheduled for the same day.  The Schedule for the Twelfth Essex (Peabody) and Twenty Eighth Middlesex (Everett) Districts are as follows:

January 22, 2013 at 5:00 PM - Nomination Papers due to City Clerks.

January 29, 2013 at 5:00 PM - Nomination Papaers due to Secretary of State.

March 5, 2013 Primary

April 2, 2013 Special Election

3. Elizabeth Warren to be sworn in

Elizabeth Warren will be sworn in as the U.S. Senator of the First Class for Massachusetts today.  On Saturday she will hold a mock ceremony in Roxbury, where her former boss Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan will swear her in.

4. Massachusetts Blue Laws you may not know

The Boston Globe has a look at some of the State's blue laws. They include: No fornication, fines for blaspheming Jesus Christ, No Adultery, Abortion still technically illegal, no killing pigeons, contraception still illegal amongst others.

5. Only Finneran there to represent convicted speakers

Unlike last year, only Tom Finneran was present in the House Chamber to represent the convicted former Speaker caucus.  Unlike last year Charles Flaherty was not present, and Sal Dimasi was unable to secure a furlough.

I am so proud of Massachusetts (0.00 / 0)
We finally have a Native American Senator from Massachusetts...

We are headed for a 'Fiscal Cliff' and the country just elected a dope whose motto is 'Forward'.

That line of attack certainly worked well in the November election!

Yeah Striker! Don't take any shit from V3PN! (0.00 / 0)
Last week he called out Ted Kennedy for swerving into a lake (could happen to anyone) killing an innocent girl in the process.  But don't worry ... I smugly reminded him that the guy was re-elected like a zillion times since the little "accident." So as they say in Massachusetts ... If a Kennedy accidentally kills a girl and no one is around to witness the event...

Yep (0.00 / 0)
You're right, it didn't work then either.

We can joke all we want.  But it's not going to win us state wide, or national races here in MA.  But hey, least we got a good laugh!

LOL - WOW Ryan - The Ted Kennedy crack really got to ya : ) (0.00 / 0)
Did I tell you I was at Warren's after party yesterday ... they served pizza!  LOL! ROFLMAO!

Why is (0.00 / 0)
Warren being sworn into office in Roxbury...who's paying to fly the Supreme and her Marshall detail up here....and why'd she not get sworn in on a Res?

Why not at Gay Head with her Native brethren?

I know the answer to #2 is...US.  Bend over SUCKAHS!!

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

Snap Count (0.00 / 0)
Time to get to work on the special elections with less than 3 weeks to identify a candidate (or candidates) and get enough signatures to get them on the ballot.

With the nature of the vacancy in Everett there is a better opportunity to make an impact on the race.  Having a State Rep on the Election Laws Committee pleading guilty to election laws violations, among other things, and potentially more dominoes to fall it is critical to have a candidate in that race.
