A new article on my Mass. Numbers blog:

What qualifications are advantageous for MA U.S. Senate candidates?
A history of open Senate races in Massachusetts since 1926

Senator John Kerry has been nominated by President Obama to succeed Hillary Rodham Clinton as the next U.S. Secretary of State and his confirmation is all but assured. There will be an interim appointment by Governor Deval Patrick, followed by a special election to fill Kerry's Senate seat. New names for possible candidates continue to come in and out of the picture. Recently-defeated Senator Scott Brown is expected to run again for the Republican nomination. Congressman Ed Markey is an early entrant with a great deal of support on the Democratic side.

People who have been mentioned as possible candidates for the seat range from Governors, Senators, and U.S. Representatives, to entrepreneurs, lawyers, and actors. What can we learn from history about the previous occupations and qualifications of successful Massachusetts candidates for the U.S. Senate? While there are examples of candidates without statewide or federal experience to be elected to the Senate, the large majority of successful candidates have statewide or federal-level qualifications, and only one candidate was elected without statewide, federal, state or local qualification since 1926, and that particular candidate had a famous family name and a brother in the White House at the time of his election.

Great question bwbensonjr.... (0.00 / 0)
Just as in private enterprise we should always ask what qualifications are needed before making a hire.  I would hope someone with more than a little private business experience - preferably some business experience that was global in nature.  Someone with some political experience is needed as well.

That aside, what difference does it make?  Should we stage a campaign based on what is right for the citizens or on what is likely to get approval from the citizens?  They are vastly different as we have seen with Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren.  We heard citizens screaming about getting someone with a bipartisan tone and we got the most partisan Senator of all - Elizabeth Warren. Another perfect example is Kennedy vs Bielat.  The voters of MA decided to overlook Bielat's military experience and business experience to vote for a guy with hardly any experience of any kind - but he had a name.

I hate to say that it is dwindling down to one qualifier - does the person have a (D) after his/her name...

We are headed for a 'Fiscal Cliff' and the country just elected a dope whose motto is 'Forward'.

I'm still of the thought (0.00 / 0)
that people are increasingly seeing the GOP as the part of God, Guns, and Gays (and Plutocrats), while they view the Dems as more in tune with working folks, the poor, and the middle class.

That's a horrible image to cede to them.  Brown got pinned more and more to the GOP, as he flailed looking for something to stick Warren with.  Saying you're bipartisan, refusing to talk of your record, then using Howies radio frat boy antics as the attacks in your campaign... ugh.  Well, it ain't gonna work here in MA.

Meanwhile, remember Warrens focus in her campaign.  middle class, middle  class, middle class (with women's issues on top).

We need to focus on policy and results that will help rebuild the middle class in this world economy, and we need to build out that trust we once had.
