Showing the Green

With New Years celebrations, a notable development in the MassGOP Chairman's Race passed un-noticed. Candidate Rick Green tweeted that he gave $5,000, the legal maximum, to the MassGOP on January 1st:

Rick Green ‏@RickGreenMA
Happy New Year! I just made a $5K donation to the #MassGOP & hope other #MaGOP will give what they can for 2013. http://www.massgop.com/donate  #tcot

Will his fellow MassGOP Chairman Candidates accept his challenge, and donate what they can to the MassGOP?

In supporting the party, Rick is certainly showing the Green.

It's helping his candidacy..  In public state committee member endorsements, Mr. Green leads his nearest opponent 26-15.

Full Disclosure, Mr. Green and his family members where financial supporters of the Marlborough Republican Committee of which I am the Chairman.

I hope they don't follow Rick Green's lead...... (0.00 / 0)
Throwing money at an institution when it lacks leadership is wasting money!  Don't you think?  Mr Green is running to be the leader of this ship without a Captain.  I think instead of donating money, he was attempting to BUY the party's favor.

Though others might be inclined to follow suit I would encourage them not to.  Instead, use ideas and hard work to win support and avoid those who want to wave wads of cash in front of everyone's eyes.  Okay, so Rick Green is rich - big deal.  Does that make him better qualified?  No wonder the Dems beat the crap out of us every time in elections - we give all the wrong signals...

Is the GOP the party of big money?  Is it only for the rich?  By throwing money as Mr Green has done it reinforces the idea that we are out of touch with the ordinary working man.

Trust me, if I had $5,000 to donate to a worthy organization it wouldn't be the state Republican Party.

Full disclosure - Rick Green has never met me, and I have never taken money from him.  He can keep it....

Ed Markey is now the official 'cheapest' man on earth.  1.5 percent to charity while the average American gave 3 times as much...

And how do your propose... (5.00 / 1)
...to pay for all those nice things people say "The Party" should?  Unicorn meat?  Politics costs money.  Simple.

Use horse meat. (5.00 / 3)
Sell it as unicorn meat. No one will know the difference.

...but you just don't make sense...you write, "Mr Green is running to be the leader of this ship without a Captain."  Well, the captain of the ship is the leader of the ship...so Green is running to lead the state GOP, so he can captain the ship.  But I'm think it is still going over your head.

Green's Lead Is Shrinking (5.00 / 1)
Previously he led Hughes 20-8 for 71%-29%. The lead is now 26-15, or 63% -37%.
And yes, he IS trying to buy the chairmanship.

Update (0.00 / 0)
Today it is shrinking further. 27-21, or 56%-44%, rounded off. Courtesy of the Lowell Sun.

Anyone With More Recent Information? (0.00 / 0)
I hear some Green voters are rethinking their position.

Not really the right time for people to donate (0.00 / 0)
I am a regular donor to the MassGOP. But to ask me to give more money now? (Both Mr. Green and Chairman Maginn have made recent appeals that I have seen.)

Of all the times to give money to the party, this seems the worst. The party failed in everything it tried to do last year and is in ruins. The Chairman has decided he will not continue and we are going to have an election in a few weeks. That's great. We should all be debating the party's future.

Yet people want me to give more money now? Why the hell would I do that?

I have no idea who the new chairman is going to be and no idea what his plan is. (Maybe he wants to re-decorate the office at Merrimac Street or lease a car for the chairman to use.) Even the front-runner, Mr. Green, has said nothing of his plans publicly, and said in one of his radio interviews that his plan is only being shown to the SC members themselves.

So why would I give money when I haven't even the slightest idea what it would be used for?

I think we all need to focus on the election, get all we can out of candidates on their plans, talk to our representatives on the SC, go to the meeting, and then, when the new leader is chosen listen to the plan presented. Then, that will be the most logical time to donate to the party.

Green's $5,000 vs. Maginn's $5,000 (0.00 / 0)
I like Mr. Green. He seems like a great guy, a great advocate, and a great Republican. But I didn't like the timing of this.

So last week, Chairman Maginn gave $5k to the party also. It was classy and gracious. He was giving money to an organization he would no longer control. It was an act of faith in the leadership to come, and I was pleased to see it.

But Mr. Green is a different case. He is giving money that in all likelihood, he will have a lot of control over. For the front-runner to do this is... weird, at best. I don't at all think it makes him look like he is trying to buy the race. No. In fact, donations are a factor people use in voting for SC or the SC voting for the chairman. It is a sign of commitment and success. So both Bob Maginn and Rick Green gave money to the party and candidates for a while before they announced their candidacies. And that is wonderful.

But for Mr. Green to give the max only 27 days before the election to the party that will be electing him? I just don't think it was a great political move. I think he should have waited until the day after the election.

Missing the point altogether (0.00 / 0)
Rick donated and is asking folks to support party because the party needs support.  He could have waited till after the election for State Chair.  But irrespective of the outcome, Rick knows that the party must be able to fund candidates at all levels, must run registration drives, must rebuild the City, Town, and Ward Committees that have fallen apart, strengthen those local committees that are thriving, and build a ground game.

Rick already has a track record of raising money for grassroots candidates. He raised a 1/4 of million dollars over 10 months through the Massachusetts Fiscal Alliance.

He's certainly not trying to buy anything. If he were, he'd be playing the same behind the scenes game that others have played in the past.

Rick has broad-based support from members of the State Committee that hold various views on many subjects.

The only issue that matters in this election is whether or not the next MA-GOP Chair is being anointed by one high profile candidate, for the purpose of diverting all party resources to one candidate.

All the candidates are talking about building the grassroots. But one particular candidate has a real credibility problem when it comes to this issue.

We've been employing this same failed strategy for too long.
The MA-GOP Chair is supposed to be the Chair of the entire Big Tent, of all the candidates, not just a one or two elite.

Rick Green represents the best hope of rebuilding the party from the Grassroots.

Timing (0.00 / 0)
I also think Rick wanted to use the whole "New Year's Resolution" idea to challenge folks to support the MA-GOP.

We have to decide if we're going to just lie down after the November defeat, or if we're going to fight on. I believe that with every crisis there is an opportunity. And now is the time to fight on.

We've got 2 or 3 special elections in March for vacant State Rep seats, Scott Brown may run again more than likely against Markey later this Spring, we've got towns with municipal elections in May, Cities this November.... All of his will take money.

Hey, I'm living on a very small fixed income. But I made a small donation and made it recurring every month. I wish I could do more. But if every Registered Republican in MA gave $10.00 we'd have $4.5 Million. If 1/3 of us made it monthly $10.00 donation then we'd $15 Million. Double that by 2014.

What could we do with that kind of money between now and 2014?

How many field offices dedicated to outreach could we open with money? Aside from funding Gubernatorial, Senatorial, and Congressional races, how much money could be spent electing State Legislators, Governor's Councilors and so on, if we had a $15,000,000 annual budget? Heck what could we do with $5,000,000 annual budget?  If one in ten Mass. Republicans gave $10.00 per month, you're looking at a $5.4 million per year.

So rather than criticizing Rick, why don't we open our wallets and do what is needed to win back this State.
I'm not sure about the actual numbers, but I believe Scott Brown actually carried more cities and towns that did Elizabeth Warren. That tells me, we can elect a lot more State Reps and State Senators if we make the investment or time, talent, and treasurer.

Do I want Rick to be the next MA-GOP Chair? Yes of course. But no matter the outcome of this race, I'm still a Republican and I will work to do what it takes to see that we don't lie down. With or without the blessing of the establishment.

Timing (0.00 / 0)
I have no issue with Rick's timing, in fact I traditionally make my donations on January 1 for the New Year.  Having a vigorous discussion about policy, priorities, etc. is necessary but the timing of a donation, not so much.

Heck, thank you to Rick & anyone who can donate - especially those able to do so at a high sum of money.

Whether someone gives $5,000 or $5, it's an investment in the party.  Heck, maybe that $5 donor will do so many times.  We could use every local committee member (much less every registered Republican) donate $5 and be in a lot better financial situation we are than we are right now, plus it would give the perception of an ownership stake in the party.

I see no reason to criticize Rick for his donation, even if it was ultimately a campaign tactic it was a positive one.  Not every motivation need be as pure as the wind driven snow in order to either be effective or appreciated.  I love Blessed Mother Teresa but most of us aren't nearly so altruistic.

I know of a chairman candidate, not one of the usual names bandied about, who mentioned to me that they weren't a millionaire and didn't have the resources of others.  So be it, most in our party aren't millionaires and there is a place for each & every one of us - even, especially, the $5, $10, $25, or $50 donors.

I agree with much of what you stated but no truer words than this, regardless of whether one supports Rick Green, Kirsten Hughes, or others:

I'm still a Republican and I will work to do what it takes to see that we don't lie down

Very good point (0.00 / 0)
This is after all politics we are discussing ;) LOL...

We all know what happens during a race for Chair. People make phone calls, people attempt to influence others, and people make political decisions.

Heck, even Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta took donations from some rather unseemly characters. Not that her motives weren't ultimately righteous. John Paul the Great was probably one of the shrewdest politicians. He had used to time his statements, visits, and actions with a particular goal in mind.

Rick donated money for the good of the party. He's also running for the good of the party. The man is American success story. He owns a business on track to do $70 million in business this year. He could just as easily move his business and residence 5 miles up the road to New Hampshire where he could save on taxes and deal with less red tape. But he chooses to state here.  If he was interested in political power for it's own sake alone, he could just as easily become a member of the NH state committee and eventually run NH-GOP Chair. Wouldn't it be easier for him to have success there?
