Union President steals from wrong people

[Promoted from my Facebook feed...]

Today the Boston Globe ran this story:

Former T inspector's union president sentenced for stealing from union

Basically, he took more than $100,000 pay and overtime he wasn't entitled to.

Now, we Republicans, of course, are shocked (shocked!!!!) that a union boss could do such a thing!

But what made this story such a treat was the reaction from the judge:

"It seems to me there are some issues, Mr. Horan, about a sense of entitlement, a sense of power . . . selfishness, ego . . . I don't know what it is," Suffolk Superior Court Judge Christine Roach said before imposing the sentence.

Really, judge?

His only crime was that he fleeced his own members and not the taxpayers. The fact that you can't understand his mindset means you have no idea how government unions operate.

(My guess is that she is a registered Democrat.)

Wrong People? (0.00 / 0)
Ed, not clear to me what you mean about Horan stealing from the "wrong people" or "how government unions operate". No one who works for or is a member of a public or private sector union expects or approves of any union official who steals. The harsher the sentence for this kind of action, the better.

This from the Suffolk DA's Office (and in my opinion the jail sentence should have longer and every dime owed must be repaid):

http://www.suffolkdistrictatto...

Today, Suffolk Superior Court Judge Christine M. Roach sentenced Horan, a Spencer resident, to two years in the house of correction. Roach ordered that he serve six months of that term up front, with the remainder suspended for a period of five years.

Assistant District Attorney Benjamin Goldberger of Conley's Special Prosecutions Unit had recommended Horan serve a state prison sentence of 18 months to two years - a recommendation, Conley said, that reflects the seriousness of Horan's criminal acts over the span of five years.

Horan will also have to pay restitution, which will be addressed at a hearing at a later date. A status date on that matter has been scheduled for Feb. 20.

Since the topic is stealing from workers how about those upstanding small business owners at Upper Crust?

Upper Crust, the bankrupt gourmet pizza chain accused of exploiting workers as it expanded across the region, owes employees about $850,000 in back wages and damages, according to court records filed by the US Department of Labor.

A federal investigation of pay practices at Upper Crust between April 2009 and January 2011 found the company violated minimum-wage and overtime laws and failed to pay 67 employees roughly $425,000 during that period.

Upper Crust owes an equal amount in damages, as well as $37,000 in civil penalties, according to the proof of claim filed last week in US Bankruptcy Court in Massachusetts.

And then there's Upper Crust stealing from the taxpayers:

Court records in the case include tax liens filed against a number of Upper Crust subsidiary corporations. The pizza company owes nearly $150,000 in unpaid meals taxes from about 10 of its restaurants, including locations in Boston's Fenway, Financial District, and South End neighborhoods; Harvard Square in Cambridge; and Lexington, according to liens and Robert Bliss, a spokesman for the Massachusetts Department of Revenue

Private sector management stealing from workers and the Commonwealth. Wow, how these guys who "built it" themselves operate.

There are crooks both sides of the table. A pox on both.

Just having a little fun (0.00 / 0)
Mr. 57 -

I was just having a little lighthearted fun about a serious issue. Now, don't get me wrong, I am very much against government unions. They just suck the taxpayers dry and the government doesn't do a very good job. They even have salaries and benefits superior to the private sector. (Which puts taxpayers in the silly position where they are paying for their servants to have a nicer retirement than they are.) Many taxpayers think union members have too-generous salaries and benefits that they are not entitled to - that should never have been granted by legislators. That was the humorous angle for this post.

What happened with the Upper Crust has nothing to do with this. (I have followed that story as well. Awful! I stopped eating there the moment I heard workers were being exploited.)
