State Spending grew by 52% since FY 2004

by: Angry Trucker

Thu Jan 24, 2013 at 21:59:12 PM EST

Deval Patrick's budget blueprint calls for $34.8 Billion Dollars. This would be a 52% increase over the 2004 budget of $22.86 Billion.

As you ponder these figures, ask yourself:

Are the services you're paying for 52% better than they were 10 years ago?

As an avid fisherman who has utilized the Fish & Game site only to find that the website hasn't been updated in over a year(ie. trout stocking schedule not updated), I continue to scratch my head, wondering where this $12 billion in additional spending went.

Excellent question Angry Trucker.... (0.00 / 0)
There seems to be a unique, and grotesquely lower standard for state government performance than any private industry.  They can charge more and provide less year after year without explanation.

I work in the planning function for private companies.  I help them drive performance, and one major understanding is that every year there is an expected increase in revenue and profit.  That means the sales team needs to work harder and open new accounts and territories, and everyone involved in backroom operations needs to do more with less.  Inventory needs to sell more quickly, transactions need to be faster and more seemless, advertising needs to be more targeted and provoking, expenses in every department need to be trimmed for waste of any kind.  These are the standards of every private company, yet state government makes no effort to even imagine such a world.

Year after year we are told by Republicans and Democrats alike that unless they get a 2,4,10 percent increase in revenue they will have to cut services for the most vulnerable.  "Gee, health insurance is rising so fast" they say.  Or "We need to provide more for the poor or middle class so we need more, more, more"...   Why can't they plan a single year with flat revenue?  Why is that so impossible to imagine that the state government will have to operate with the same amount of money as last year and get the same amount done.

Most Americans are planning to cut their house budget and feed, cloth, and insure their family's for less than last year.  Yet, Deval Patrick steps forward and unabashedly claims that he needs not just a little more, but a lot more than last year.  When does government go back to serving the citizens as opposed to what we have now, which is citizens serving the government?  We work for them!  Every year 'Tax-Freedom' day gets a little closer to Christmas - have you noticed?

This trend is NOT right!  It is unfair!

Ed Markey is now the official 'cheapest' man on earth.  1.5 percent to charity while the average American gave 3 times as much...
