MassGOP Chairman's Role as a Public Spokesperson

by: BNCordeiro

Fri Jan 25, 2013 at 06:40:03 AM EST

I received this email, with this subject line, yesterday from State Committeewoman Patricia Jennings.

If there is one thing we all learned from the last election cycle, it's just how quickly the wrong words spoken to the wrong audience can turn our party and its candidates upside down.  Governor Romney's 47% remark will stick with many after this election.  One of the important roles of Republican State Committee chairman is that of a public spokesperson.  It is critically important that the person we select as chair understand the impact of their words... and especially the words we choose when speaking with the press.

Yesterday, Massachusetts' largest labor union seized on a statement made on WRKO radio by Rick Green which referred to "union thugs" supporting the Democratic Party.

We all know the slurs advanced by the Democratic machine to slander our Party; rich, racist, greedy... and we all know that they are false.   But the media is quick to pounce on our words when they aren't carefully chosen as evidence that those slurs hold some level of truth (which of course, they do not) This can alienate important constituencies that we need to build coalitions with in order to win more elections in Massachusetts.

As most of you know, I represent First Suffolk district.  Here in union-heavy South Boston, Republicans have made inroads among historically Democratic leaning voters.  I don't have to look very far down my own street in South Boston to see a Boston teacher, a Boston firefighter and a Boston Police officer- all rank and file union members, all of whom voted for and supported Republicans this cycle.   That said, statements about union thugs aren't going to help us continue to win their support.

We are fortunate to have two personable, smart , and successful people running to Chair the party.  Both have a commitment to the advancement of our party and both have done very important work for the party.  But the role of the Chairperson does require a certain level of experience when dealing with the media.  Kirsten Hughes is the candidate with that level of experience.  She will be able to manage the difficult media situations with the finesse and skill that will keep us on track.  We will be a party that is focused on winning, rather than explaining, backpeddling and defending... or worse even, trying to distance ourselves from statements made by the party Chair.   I don't need to tell all of you that this next election cycle is critical for our party.  Let's win!

BNCordeiro :: MassGOP Chairman's Role as a Public Spokesperson
For the interest of full disclosure, I have endorsed Kirsten Hughes for MassGOP Chairman.

Link and context (4.00 / 1)
(Link to that radio interview is here: http://tunein.com/topic/?Topic... - statement is right at the beginning)

I wrote about this comment on Facebook. I don't blame Rick Green, really. I just think when we are talking to fellow Republicans, it's too easy to say things like that. We have all done it. I have done it. (But yes, the new chairman must be careful.)

Here is what I wrote on Facebook:

One of the problems with right-wing media is that when you get comfy there, you say things that won't work with a general election audience. Here is how Rick Green, opens his interview with the Kuhner Report. (This is the exact quote.)

"One of your callers talked about the organization of the Governor. The Democratic Party, the gentleman, John Walsh, who chairs their party, his union thugs have created quite an organization, but is has yielded one of the most corrupt states in the country."

Wow. I have many friends who are Democrats, some of whom worked hard for Elizabeth Warren and others. They are a diverse group of people who care about politics as much as I do. To characterize the entire Democratic machine as "union thugs" is wrong and is the kind of partisan garbage that will not get us to 51%. (Of course the unions are involved. Of course there have been some awful incidents. But we must be careful to say that bad behavior by union activists should be beneath the standards of the Democrats, not to say that is the standard.)

Do I think that Rick Green really thinks that about the Democratic machine? No. I am pretty sure he does not. But when you hang out with the hardcore right, it is just too easy to end up saying stuff like that, because the audience eats it up.

We have all mistakenly said things that could offend the Democrat Party... (5.00 / 1)
A perfect example, check my last 250 posts on RedMassGroup...

We are headed for a 'Fiscal Cliff' and the country just elected a dope whose motto is 'Forward'.

Union Thugs (0.00 / 0)
I consider them the union leadership. The rank and file members are typically blocked from actively participating in the union they pay for.
Take the SEIU for example: their meetings are held during workdays when most of it's members are "gasp" WORKING! I proudly support union WORKERS! JUST NOT THE FAT LAZY SLUGS IN LEADERSHIP.
Take the state police union as another example: they actually ENDORSED a state rep. who literally urinated on one of their members. Fortunately that district now has a Republican State Representative now.

Meh - The Dem Party Chair called Scott Brown an "Honorary Woman" (0.00 / 0)
But consider this, Kirsten Hughes  ... Singer/Songwriter, Lawyer, City Council Member, and now super mom with her first kid ... just blew the biggest brain fart I've ever seen in print ... => http://bluemassgroup.com/2013/...

The problem with Kirsten Hughes is everyone and their grandmother knows the girl is in way over her head.  She has a full plate to deal with and it shows when you can't spell correctly in an advertisement.  So yeah she's definitely not capable of crossing all her T's if you know what I mean.

And the fact that she aired that piece of crap (even for a few minutes) in the public domain shows just how naive she is.  Earth to Jessica Simpson ... the MA Dems are watching your every move, check your spelling please.

She is a little bit hot though....... (0.00 / 0)
Is this a double standard?  The Dems are all over her for spelling a word wrong, yet Mumbles Menino doesn't know the names of ANY member of the Boston Celtics or New England Patriots.

We Need Some PR (0.00 / 0)
Let's start with the "union thugs" comment first.  Was it the best choice of words, probably not, but did it get people talking, a little.  But we need to be able to push the message a step further.  We need to explain to voters and consumers and taxpayers why this is a concern.  Here we have an opportunity to explain why some of the union tactics as well as some of those of their supporters on Beacon Hill are wrong and cost us money.  We can start with Project Labor Agreements and explain that they are agreements to only use union labor in return for the unions agreeing not to strike or cause disharmony on the job potentially costing time, etc.  Put simply we are paying more to make sure we have no strikes.  I any other circumstance this would be considered an illegal protection racket, here it's codified into law and regulations.  This is nuts and people generally think its nuts.

Next, if we are going to pick on Rick for the "Union Thug" comment, how about giving him credit for calling John Walsh the "Grinch who stole good government". I mean that's a borrowing classic.

The role of the Chair is many things and being a good PR person for the Party is critical, but, in my opinion, that does not preclude the occasional incendiary statement to get people talking and debating.

Think back to last Chairs.  What has Maginn said that you remember?  Yeah, thought so.  How about Jenn?  The ill fated Bay State Banner interview, definitely got people talking with that one.

Do we want a boring and unnotable Chair or do we want one who will get stuff  done even if the occasional hares comes out the wrong way?  I chose action.
