MassGOP Legislators Endorse Kirsten Hughes for MassGOP Chair

by: BNCordeiro

Fri Jan 25, 2013 at 22:29:17 PM EST

I spent an hour watching the first episode of the final season my favorite TV show, Spartacus: War of the Damned, and when I checked my computer again I found the following email sent to State Committee members.

January 25, 2013

Dear Republican State Committee Member,

As members of the House and Senate Republican Caucuses, hailing from the Cape Cod Canal to the Pioneer Valley and points in-between, we are proud to enthusiastically endorse Kirsten Hughes as the next Chair of the Massachusetts Republican Party. We ask you, our dedicated GOP friends and colleagues, to join us in supporting Kirsten.

Kirsten is known to many within the Party and has been an active participant in Republican endeavors for many years. From serving as a field coordinator for the Party when the Massachusetts House more than doubled its numbers, to serving as Senator Scott Brown's Deputy Finance Director at a time when the campaign fundraised a record $42 million, Kirsten has demonstrated her commitment to the ideals and goals of the Republican Party.

Additionally, Kirsten rolled up her sleeves and dove headfirst into local politics. Serving as the first woman ever elected to the Quincy City Council, Kirsten prevailed in a city where Democrats outnumber Republicans 9 to 1 - no easy feat! With her experience on the City Council, she is keenly aware of and appreciates the trials and tribulations which we face daily on Beacon Hill.

Last November was a trying time for Republicans in Massachusetts. Our party suffered hard-fought losses in races ranging from Washington D.C. to Beacon Hill all the way to Main Street. However, our candidates stayed true to their principles, and sought to bring a voice to the taxpayers of the Commonwealth. While the results were not what we had hoped for and worked towards, the lessons we learned were invaluable.

We know Kirsten has the right qualities to lead our Party at this extremely pivotal time, especially during the special elections we will endure this year and throughout next year's mid-term elections. Kirsten has the proven track record necessary to lead our Party forward - tackling major fundraising, working closely with grassroots activists, and advancing the Republican message in largely Democratic communities.

As you are aware, our work has already begun. Massachusetts Democrats have already stated their intention to avenge the special-election loss of 2010. The 2013 and 2014 campaign cycles will be some of the hardest we will ever fight. Not only are the Democrats intent on once again retaining both of the Commonwealth's United States Senate seats, they are looking to build upon the gains made on Beacon Hill.

The individuals joining us in endorsing Kirsten are seasoned veterans and political newcomers. Regardless of tenure, the collective group understands the necessity of selecting a party leader who will prioritize candidates at all levels, while implementing and maintaining an aggressive and effective fundraising strategy. To many, this may sound like a daunting task. To Kirsten, it is a challenge worth tackling because she believes, wholeheartedly, in the cause - the Massachusetts Republican Party.

The time has come to address our Party's future. We must rally around Kirsten and enter the upcoming special elections as a unified party - united we will stand and prosper, divided we will suffer. We will undoubtedly have differences of opinions on various issues, but at the end of the day we all agree that we want our communities, our state, and our Party to thrive.

We hope you will join us in supporting Kirsten Hughes for State Party Chairwoman and as always, thank you for all you do to support us. We look forward to working with you and our new Chair towards a victorious 2013 and 2014!

Respectfully,

Bradley H. Jones, Jr.

Evidencing a Need for Change (5.00 / 1)
Brock,

Thank you for posting this letter from the Mass GOP leadership up on Beacon Hill.  It is indeed very interesting in many ways.

It is not interesting in the names listed as most, if not all, have previously endorsed Kirsten.  It seems as though this email is targeted at the 15 or so SC members who have not publicly endorsed a candidate for Chair.  Show that the leadership of the Party is behind her.  Not sure if that helps or hurts in my opinion and it probably depends on the predisposition of the reader.

What I do find interesting is how it reinforces the message previously delivered by Minority Leader Jones when he was quoted as saying the special Senate election was the top, middle and bottom of the ticket, the only race in town when we have at least three opportunities to pick up House seats via special elections already called.  That comment, what some have referred to as either unfortunate or out of context and what I call a window into his perspective, showed us some of the value that Minority Leader Jones in "down ticket" races.

This email further reinforces that message with the choice of words in the following sentence:

We know Kirsten has the right qualities to lead our Party at this extremely pivotal time, especially during the special elections we will endure this year and throughout next year's mid-term elections
(emphasis added)

Since when have we had to ENDURE special elections! We thrive in special elections when we are able to combine our resources and turn out our voters in greater numbers leading to exciting, some might say, stunning, electoral victories.  Did we have to endure Scott Brown's electoral victory in the last Senate special election?  No, we worked our tails off for a stunning victory.  Do those representatives elected via special election think that we had to endure their elections and addition to the caucus?  No, we worked hard and were jubilant with the outcome.

So why does Minority Leader Jone choose to use such somber and downbeat language in this email?  I would argue its because he is showing, once again, his predisposition to the status quo.  Rather than grow the caucus through electoral success in regularly scheduled and special elections, he seems happiest with the minority representation that will keep him in power as minority leader.

Unfortunately, Minority Leader Jones' word choice and tone in this letter doesn't excite me.  Rather, it saddens me to see a leader who looks on opportunities to increase our caucus as something we must endure.  I want a leader who looks, instead, on special elections as an opportunity to grow our caucus with enthusiasm and excitement, two qualities missing from minority Leaders Jones' email, unfortunate, but sadly not unexpected.

It's time for new leadership.  First with Rick Green and then with a new minority leader.  Time for the first step is Thursday night.

"first women ever elected to the Quincy City Council"? (0.00 / 0)
That can't possibly be true.

Margaret LaForst (4.00 / 1)
Was a member of the Quincy City Council in the 2010/2011 term having been elected Ward 1 Councillor in November 2009.  Since Kirsten was elected in Nvember 2011 (Margaret was also re-elected) there is no way for Kirsten to have the the FIRST woman elected.  Heck only had to go back one election to see that statement was erroneous.

Hmm (0.00 / 0)
Maybe it's supposed to be first Republican woman- though even that seems pretty unlikely.  Or youngest woman?

Anyway, the same statement is on her website, without qualification:

Currently serving on the Quincy City Council, Kirsten became the first woman elected to the position in the city's history.

Family Lore (0.00 / 0)
Maybe it's part of Kirsten's family lore that she was the first woman elected to the Quincy City Council.

Based on the wording ... (0.00 / 0)
She was elected to represent a specific Ward. Based on the wording you quoted, it's my understanding that she's talking about being the first woman elected to that Ward. So, she might be just telling the truth.

We're talking about a dunce that can't spell remember.

Currently serving on the Quincy City Council, Kirsten became the first woman elected to the position in the city's history.
She clearly wants the reader to think she was the first woman voted to the Quincy City Counsil ... I mean who gives a shit about specific wards?????  The sad part is she probably believes it.
