The state in which we live: Massachusetts most liberal state says Time magazine

by: Karl Marx

Sat Feb 02, 2013 at 12:25:25 PM EST

Decrepit Time magazine channels Jon Keller: Massachusetts is the most liberal state. (D.C. ranked first but that's not a state). We know that we aren't going to turn into Alabama nor should we ever graft such a conservative agenda upon Massachusetts. But this is the world in which we operate, at a great disadvantage. It's a reality check the "Republican wing of the Republican Party" ought to acknowledge. Stating the obvious should be a regular exercise.

Alabama has taken the crown previously held by Mississippi as the most conservative state in the union, according to a new Gallup poll.  Last year the top four were Mississippi, Utah, and Wyoming, with Alabama coming in fourth.  Overall, Americans in 2012 remained more likely to identify as conservative (38%) than as moderate (36%) or as liberal (23%), although liberals have gained 2 percentage points compared to 2011.

On the liberal side, the medalists have gotten stronger. Washington DC, Massachusetts, and Oregon, the 2011 liberal top three, retain their titles in 2012, as more residents identify as liberal than the prior year. Residents of Washington DC are more liberal than the highest state, Massachusetts, by over ten percentage points.

More Conservatives Than Liberals Even in Mass (0.00 / 0)

Only 30% of Massachusetts residents identify as liberals yet liberals are 100% of our state's federal office holders.  Self-identified conservatives are at least as large a share of the population as are liberals in Massachusetts.

What do these two facts tell you?  It is indicative of a massive failure of the Massachusetts Republican Party to speak for and thus gain electoral success from the millions of conservative voters in this state.

Until the state GOP starts putting forth a conservative policy agenda that betters the lives of real people and articulates conservative ideals, nothing will change.  Nothing.

No (0.00 / 0)
Your math is flawed. 30% of respondents identified themselves as "liberal" and you draw the conclusion that there are "more conservatives than liberals" in Massachusetts. That logic only works if there are only two options - liberal or conservative. But that's clearly not the case in this poll; some respondents obviously answered something like "moderate" while others probably didn't identify themselves ideologically at all. Of course, that's consistent with what sensible people already know about Massachusetts politics. Republicans win elections when they win among independent voters and make a meaningful dent into self-identified Democrats. You're right in saying that Republicans need a "policy agenda that betters the lives of real people" but you're wrong in linking that to conservativism rather than pragmatism.

Operative words are "at least as large" (0.00 / 0)

At least as large is parity (i.e. 30% and up).  In fact, the number of self-identified liberals and self-identified conservatives in Massachusetts is about the same.  Gallup reports a liberal advantage of +2.2 percent for Mass, well within the margin of error (I've seen other polls that have the percentage of conservatives in Mass slightly higher.)  http://www.gallup.com/poll/160...  What is beyond dispute is that the 30% of Mass that is liberal controls 100% of our federal offices while the 30% that is conservative controls 0%.  Pretty pathetic performance from the conservative party in this state, isn't it?
