Town of Westford proposed "Assault Weapons" ban

by: Sawx75

Tue Feb 05, 2013 at 11:01:54 AM EST

The Town of Westford Board of Selectmen have proposed an "Assault Weapons" ban in their most recent bylaws. A call to action has been circulating from a group called Westford Pro 2A as follows.

Fellow Residents, Gun Owners, Friends,

The proposed ban made the Lowell Sun today, so if you haven't seen it please get a copy and check it out.

There is supposed to be a segment on WBUR 90.9FM tomorrow morning during the 7AM hour. Please tune in!

The time has come for ALL of us to call our selectmen and let them know our opposition to Article 30.  Please take the time to email AND call them.  Please do both.  When you do, here are some talking points you may want to focus on.
The Selectmen seem to have bypassed normal town process for understanding an issue and formulating a response (public comment prior to issuing an Article). Why?
Due to impact on civil rights, long periods of public input, and out reach to affected parties is critical. - Why None Now?
What about the criminal? Will they disarm? If not, are we safer?
If this is a public safety issue, how many lives are expected to be saved per year, and based on what public studies?  No studies are cited, only three rare (albeit horrific) instances. Why?
If you target shoot or hunt with a potentially banned firearm, state so, and explain that these are the most popular firearms for that purpose.
If you do not get to talk to them, please leave a message with your name and number and ask them to call you back. Call daily until you are able to speak with them.

All of their phone numbers and email addresses are in the right hand column. You will notice that Bob Jefferies contact info is not there. We are fairly well convinced that attempting to change his mind would be a waste of time.

There will be a meeting on Thursday night. We are nailing down a location and time and should have that out to you tomorrow.

Thank you,

Westford Pro2A

I find it hypocritical for them to declare it as an "Assault Rifle" when DHS defines a select fire version as a PDW (personal defense weapon)

https://www.fbo.gov/?s=opportu...

This announcement is being placed in accordance with the Federal Acquisition Regulation (FAR) paragraph 5.207.  It is a combined synopsis/solicitation for commercial items.  5.56x45mm NATO, select-fire firearm suitable for personal defense.  This announcement constitutes the only solicitation and proposals are being requested.  See attachments for complete details.

From the Westford website link above

§95.4.1 Preamble
Whereas, there exists a certain class of firearms that are not useful for purposes of hunting or self-defense, but rather are "military style" weapons designed for offensive use.
Whereas, the military features of such "assault weapons", which are designed to enhance their capacity to shoot multiple human targets very rapidly, are preferred by criminals and place law enforcement officers at particular risk because of their high fire power.
Whereas, the Town has an interest in controlling crime and protecting its citizens and police force from the threat of harm posed by such dangerous and unusual weapons.

§95.4.3 Exemptions
The provisions of this Bylaw shall not apply to possession by a law enforcement officer for purposes of law enforcement.

So these weapons are not good for self-defense?  Then why do the police want them and remain exempt from the proposal?  Clearly these weapons are very good for self defense - weren't they created by and for our national defense?  If our local and national defense groups want them and need them, then I would say they are very good at personal self-defense.

Westford Resident 1: "We need to get rid of assault weapons because they aren't very good for self-defense."

Westford Resident 2: "What about the police, do they need to get rid of them as well?".

Westford Resident 1: "No, if the police gave up their assault weapons how will they defend themselves?".

Westford Resident 2: "I thought the weapons were not good for self-defense?".

Westford Resident 1: "They are not good at defending residents, but they are good at defending police!".

Westford Resident 2: "How do the guns know who is who?".

Westford Resident 1: "These guns are not good for hunting either!".

Westford Resident 2: "Is that because they shoot a lot of bullets all at once?  If so, it sounds like the gun would be very good for hunting".

Westford Resident 1: "You don't need a gun that fires a lot of bullets at once in order to kill a deer".

Westford Resident 2: "Suppose you are hunting a bear or a mountain lion, or a 1,200 pound moose?  Suppose you are camping and a bear attacks you?".

Westford Resident 1: "I told you - the guns are not good for self-defense.  You should call the police and hope the bear isn't too hungry.  That is what a 'peace-loving' American would do".

Westford Resident 2: "Will the police find me if I am camping in the woods?".

Westford Resident 1: "Yes, they will hear you screaming".

We are headed for a 'Fiscal Cliff' and the country just elected a dope whose motto is 'Forward'.

There is NOTHING (0.00 / 0)
I'd rather haved in the house to protect my house and the inhabitants therin than an AR-15...when one or more people break in.
Easy to use....for me, my wife, and my kids when they're old enough.
Accurate.
Light in the hands.
Nearly recoil free.
....and there are 29 more rounds where that one came from.

Anyone that has used one knows this.

.....but don't forget that "self defense" and "hunting" are not the reasons for the 2nd Amendment.

Stunt (0.00 / 0)
It's a stunt.

The town of Westford can't just make their own firearm laws. The town is preempted by the State. The law as proposed is just un-enforceable.

Looks like the crackpot Selectman Jefferies is looking to subject his town to needless spending to defend the inevitable lawsuits from any citizen against whom there is an attempt to enforce the rule.

Imagine if the Town of Westford passed an ordinance making abortion illegal or outlawing gay marriage within the city limits.

Elizabeth Warren: a bankruptcy professor, bankrupt of ideas

Reminds me of my town (5.00 / 1)
This reminds me of my town in the immediate reaction to Newtown, CT.  Basically, someone in town proposed putting a town imposed "gun free zone" around each of the public schools but the expressed reason for it was to intentionally push a long-time firearms store out of business.  Someone is angry that, in their personal opinion, this small business is too close to an elementary school.

Of course, there are absolutely no allegations of the gun store ever having done anything wrong but simply because it exists it must now b eput out of business!

I haven't heard of any movement on the matter by the Select Board but the idea is abominable.  Our Constitutional rights trump your irrational fears!
