There Will be a Primary

(It is now a three person race.  Winslow, Fetherston and Gomez. - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

The Globe reports that Gabriel Gomez has pulled papers to run for the U.S. Senate.   http://www.boston.com/politica...

Dan Winslow pulled papers last week.

I don't know Gomez but based on his background, he is certainly quite accomplished.  Looking forward to learning more about him and what his agenda is.

In my opinion, Winslow is the smartest guy or gal on Beacon Hill.  I think he'll run a great campaign.  Very thoughtful.

Good news all round.

From the Globe: (0.00 / 0)
Gomez, a former Navy SEAL and fighter pilot, is scheduled to meet in Washington, D.C., Tuesday with officials from the National Republican Senatorial Committee. Gomez will be accompanied to the meeting by Ron Kaufman, the state party's national committeeman, who has been involved in the GOP's scramble to find a credible candidate.

National Committee Out Of Touch with Activists (4.50 / 2)
If this isn't the clearest indication yet that the National Committee people have lost any semblance of connection with voters and the activists in Mass then I am not sure what is.

Gomez may be a perfectly likable fellow, but how can we put someone up for Senate who, (1) donated not just to Obama in 2008 but also to Alan Khazie in 2009 and (2) swung so far with the founding of OPSEC that he was viewed as more of a hindrance than help in many cases (and who can forget him getting schooled on Hardball, hope he has learned his lesson to be better prepared).

I am afraid that Kaufman and Healey think that they have discovered the next wonder kid only to potentially foist another Hudak on us.

Winslow (0.00 / 0)

I hope that Ron Kaufman does the same for Winslow as for Gomez.  If not, I will be disappointed.

What good news? (5.00 / 1)
I agree with earlier post, a (typically) bloody Republican primary within the short timeframe allowed by Scott Brown is insane. I was glad several people were willing to jump in, but once Dan Winslow made his decision, I'd think everyone would get on board and help him get his signatures and start running against the Democrat. Yankee Pundit is right, Dan is one of the smartest guys around; I'd pick him out of everyone in Massachusetts to be my Senator. I'd be happy with Michael Sullivan or Bruce Tarr if they'd announced first, too.
BTW, the other post about signatures being collected at the Friday Morning Group: I wasn't there but checked it out, Paul Craney had generic sheets for anyone who wanted them.
I never heard of Gabriel Gomez. Hope he'll run for something local sometime, so we can get to know him.

Gomez did run locally. In 2003, Gomez was defeated in his run for Cohasset Selectman. (0.00 / 0)
Gomez just rich guy who thinks money buys organization yet he couldn't even get elected Selectman with a 1000 votes.

1. Gomez endorsed Obama over McCain in 2008 and Alan Khazei over Scott Brown in the 2010 Special Election.

AND

2. Then, Gomez got pissed at Obama and joined a Birther Organization.

Now he wants to be the Party nominee.

Is this a joke???? It sounds like Kaufman and Brown are pissed because Winslow supported Rick Green.

Kaufman is a moron and Scott Brown is self-serving.

Defeated for selectman. (0.00 / 0)
That should earn him a spot on here, right?

We don't have any candidates yet. (0.00 / 0)
As far as I'm concerned, Doug Bennett was our best shot at getting on the ballot with signatures.  Winslow will most likely make it, but I still have doubts.  Gomez and everyone else? Not a chance.

Bennett is still running (5.00 / 1)
At least according to an email he sent out today about collecting petition signatures.

Giving money to Obama is a disqualifier, no? (0.00 / 0)
What goes on in the mind of someone who votes for Obama?  You walk into the booth, and say, this is the guy I want to be President.

Now, how about actually cutting a check to help the guy get elected. You are saying, not only am I going to vote for this guy, but I want to help convince others to vote for him as well.

Conventional wisdom is that a Republican needs to show some degree of moderation to win in Massachusetts. But giving money to Obama? Really???

We are not talking about some litmus test like abortion or a flat tax, or some other kind of issue. We are talking about giving money to promote the agenda that we are hoping to send someone to Washington to put the brakes on!

It's almost a ludicrous concept. I would hope the very first speech of Gomez' is to explain himself. And if not, I would hope Winslow calls him on it immediately.

Perhaps the fact that we have seen millions voting themselves into complete dependence on a tyrant has made our generation understand that to choose one's government is not necessarily to secure freedom.

Giving money to President Obama is a disqualifier no doubt about it. (0.00 / 0)
Not only is Gomez out of consideration for this but his career in politics should be over.

It bothered me that Gomez began his announcement in Spanish.  Not saying I wouldn't vote for him over it, but it felt like he began his campaign by poking me in the eye.

Gomez, National Committeeman and Committeewoman and Grassroots (0.00 / 0)
It is interesting to see our RNC Committeeman and Committeewoman both supporting Gomez especially in light of his lack of participation in state and local level politics (leaving aside, for now, his endorsement of Obama).  What do I mean by lack of participation:

1). Most recent donation on OCPF - June 2004

2). Sum total of ALL donations reported on OCPF - $175

3). Total number of donations on OCPF - 2

I am not saying that donations alone show participation in local Republican politics, but not a single penny to any candidate, party or town committee in over 8 years takes lack of activity to a whole new level.

It serves as a slap in the face to all those activists who make some donations to state rep, state senate and other statewide office candidates not to mention to the MassGOP.  Heck, with no donations listed I don't think he has even attended a state convention.

This is the man who has received the backing of our RNC Committee members?  We have gone from Scott Brown who rose through the elected ranks and was a product of the grassroots to our own version of Lizzie Warren, someone who appears to think that they are too good for local town and district politics but now wants our support, contributions and effort to help get him elected.  Well, you earn my support, so I will be helping gather signatures for another candidate.

Now, I think it's time for the State Committee to ask Ms. Healey and Mr. Kaufman why thy have chosen Mr. Gomez?  I think they deserve the courtesy and respect, I know that they have earned it with their work and activism, something that cannot be said of Mr. Gomez

Problematic (0.00 / 0)
The RNC Committeeman and woman shouldn't be taking sides in a primary like this to begin with.

The fact that Mr. Kaufman is bringing him Washington to meet with Senatorial Campaign Committee, is premature and unwarranted.

Here's a guy who donated serious cash to and voted for Obama in 2008, couldn't win an election for Selectman, and also supported another moon bat. So WTF?????????????

Could it be that they see Gomez as a way of raising money for the Federal Account, so that Brown can use it in 2-years for Senate run, or for something else in 2016?  Lots of money to be made by consultants on losing races.

The whole thing stinks and it's the sort of thing that will have the grass roots staying home if not leaving party.
