STATEMENT BY DAN WINSLOW (R-NORFOLK) ON DEMOCRATS' CALL FOR PLEDGE IN US SENATE SPECIAL ELECTION

by: Dan Winslow

Thu Feb 14, 2013 at 14:48:16 PM EST

(Winslow not in on Peoples Pledge.  This is great.  The People's pledge was a mistake in my estimation in the last race. - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

I support reforming the way we finance campaigns in this country. But I am surprised with such an urgent need for action in Washington, DC that anyone would be wasting time going over old plays that won't produce a single job, a better education, a more secure retirement, a cleaner environment, a lower deficit, or an honest and straightforward way to finance our elections.

For congressmen Markey and Lynch to posture about outside money in politics when their coffers are already filled with money from outside Massachusetts just shows you how inauthentic this pledge really is. And the national Democrats already are spending money here by sending in their dirty tricks troops to my town.

I welcome any outside group to contribute positive bio or issue ads, mailings, social media and the like. I am running a different kind of campaign. I am not an entrenched Washington insider who has to sign a pledge in order to run a fair, clean, positive campaign.

If you welcome positive outside bio or issue ads... (0.00 / 1)
...will you condemn and call of outside organizations to pull down negative attack ads?

What a meaningless pile of drivel (0.00 / 0)
Meaningless pile of drivel, redundant, I know.

But seriously, a candidate for office that makes any kind of promise of conduct for his campaign other than i) to do his damnest and ii) obey the law is simply crippling his chances and thereby NOT doing his damnest.

Condemn negative attack ad?  Of course not.  It's free speech.  Your candidate doesn't like him, let him whine about them and condemn them.

An effect of the pledge was that candidates had to own their attacks. (0.00 / 0)
No more hiding behind some affiliated organization.  I thought that was pretty good.

Pretty good (0.00 / 0)
Why on earth would a republican candidate, on the defensive from the first step in Massachusetts simply because of the numbers, enters into any kind of agreement that further limits his ability to campaign.

With a pledge you think is "pretty good" who are you trying to protect?  The sensitive eyes and ears of TV viewers?

If some affiliated orgs wants to campaign for you let them.  When John Birch supported Reagan with ads and he was asked about it he explained that 'they support me, I didn't say I supported them.'  Good answer.

The right pledge:  I agree to do my best, work hard during the campaign and obey the laws.  The democrat can take all the pledges he wants.

The pledge never banned outside PACs from donating to candidates did it?
