| Have you submitted your entry to the 2013 Better Government Competition?
This year, we're seeking ideas to facilitate job creation. Read our guidelines for details on contest rules, deadline, and potential topics (what can we do to make it easier for manufacturing businesses to succeed, can we draw lessons from states with high rates of small business growth, fix broken job training programs, increase community college programs' workforce relevance?) We are hosting an event on March 6th, on controlling health care costs featuring Forbes contributor and former Romney advisor Avik Roy and Harvard economist David Cutler. Register and/or please share this link: http://conta.cc/WQU1dD The Boston Globe on Sunday published four views on whether Governor Patrick should raise taxes. Here’s Pioneer Executive Director Jim Stergios’ contribution: "No, this isn't real reform." Jim was on WBUR’s RadioBoston program yesterday discussing an issue President Obama mentioned in his State of the Union Address: universal Pre-K. Jim argued that federal involvement in early education has shown little to no benefit, if we look at Headstart, and we cannot afford the costs. 22 applications for new charter schools were submitted in 2012, and five of them will make it to vote by the state education board this month. Pioneer is holding a forum tomorrow on charter schools’ success nationally and in Massachusetts. As always, we aim for a lively debate rather than an echo chamber, so we’re really proud to feature National Alliance for Public Charter Schools’ Nina Rees, Al Shanker biographer Richard Kahlenberg, MTA President Paul Toner, City on a Hill Charter’s Erica Brown, and many more – space is still available.
