Democrat Gabriel Gomez sought out appointment from Deval Patrick

by: TomKinison

Sat Feb 23, 2013 at 09:07:11 AM EST

According to the Boston Globe's Frank Phillips, Gabriel E. Gomez, the Cohasset businessman who is running as a Republican in the US Senate special election, lobbied Democratic Governor Deval Patrick to give him the temporary appointment to the seat after John F. Kerry resigned to become secretary of state.

With this new information and the facts that Gomez endorsed and donated to Democrat Barack Obama in 2008 over Vietnam War Veteran and GOP Presidential Candidate John McCain AND ALSO donated $1000 to Ultra Liberal Democrat Alan Khazei over Scott Brown in the 2010 Special Election, many Massachusetts Republican Activists are concerned that Gomez is really an opportunistic Democrat who pretends to be a Republican in name only (RINO).

Gomez's only previous experience in public service was a shellacking in his last place defeat in his 2003 unsuccessful candidacy for Cohassett Selectman.

Click on the following link to read about Gomez's unsuccessful lobbying effort to Democrat Deval Patrick for appointment:

ok so he finished 3rd in a 3 way race for Selectman (0.00 / 0)

Whatever place he finished in... (0.00 / 0)
is irrelevant. The other facts Tom brings up are more than enough to discredit Gomez from being taken as a serious candidate. If you are a proud Republican, do not sign this guys' signature papers.

Given Gomez a tiny bit on credit on this story... (5.00 / 1)
...he was asking the Gov to appoint him as a Republican.  But overall, Gomez has got some explaining to do.  I obviously don't have a dog in this primary hunt, but I look forward to "the interview" where he lays out a coherent explanation of his evolution of donating to Obama and Khazei to becoming a spokesperson for a fringe anti-Obama Super PAC and where ever his now on the spectrum.

My sense he'll say he gave money to Obama in the primary because he thought Hillary was a stronger general election candidate and he was trying to undermine that (how'd that work out?)  But that position is undermined in the Hardball interview (available over at BMG) regarding his PAC effort, where he said it was a "bipartisan" super PAC and said he as a past support of Obama.

As for the Khazei donation, I suspect the truth is a wealthy friend asked him to contribute and, for the friend,, he did.  That of course won't be the right political answer (not sure if there is one) and it will interesting to hear his spin.  If he somehow gets out of the primary, he'll have a real tough time explaining his very public involvement in a PAC that basically invented a charge that Obama gave no credit to the military in killing Bin Laden and took all the credit himself.  First, watch the Hardball interview, he was back pedaling during it.  Secondly, he'll have to tell the MA electorate why he was involved with a group that featured a "birther".  The MA electorate is definitely capable of electing a R in this race.  But they will never elect someone tainted by the looney fringe.

Are we sure about that? (0.00 / 0)
Patrick is keeping mum.  The idea that Gomez was asking Patrick to be bipartisan and appoint him as a Republican came from the Gomez campaign.  I'm not entirely sure that's accurate.  When he was asking Gov. Patrick he could have easily suggested many different things such as that he would serve as an Independent or something.

That is interesting about the donation.  Wasn't that something that Rush Limbaugh was telling people to do?  Donate to Obama to knock off Hillary?  I vaguely remember something like that.

No, I'm not at all sure of that... (0.00 / 0)
...and given the inconsistencies of the past, I would put anything past him.  But for now Patrick will stay mum (and unless Gomes catches fire and has a real chance, Patrick will stay mum) Gomez can spin this anyway he wants.

Gomez didn't just give once to Obama but on two different times he gave money (4.00 / 1)
Gomez did NOT just give donations to Barack Obama for President once, in fact Gomez donated to Obama in both 2007 AND 2008.

Candidate Support (0.00 / 0)
I have been discouraged by Mr. Gomez and his approach to the special senate election so far.  My frustration mainly is focused on his appearant lack of support for grassroot activists and campaigns.

First, he has spent time with the establishment types in the MassGOP including a tour of DC to meet the powerbrokers and others in the Party.  However, he will not be making any publica appearances until a fundraiser and kickoff event on February 28th, the day after signatures are due.

Second, no interviews, are you serious.  He has  little to no name recognition and this seems to be an odd move.  It would also help all of us to get to know him a little better.

Finally, putting aside the donations to Obama and Khazie, he has made very, very, very few contributions to State Rep, Sate Senate and constitutional office candidates in the last decade.  Looking at OCPF  http://www.efs.cpf.state.ma.us... he has made ONLY $175 in donations in the last decade+. Heck most of us have probably eclipsed that amount and make far less than he does.  Tis is very disappointing and something that I would ask him about if he bothered to meet with any of the RTC/RCCs

I'm reminded of the Rudy Guiliani strategy. (0.00 / 0)
During the Presidential primary for 2008 he made the decision to avoiding all the early states.

That didn't work out so well.

Getting out & about (0.00 / 0)
I did just receive this via email:

Many of you know me already but if we haven't met yet, my name is Kayla Berube and I am a new addition to the Gabriel Gomez for US Senate team. Copied on this email is my good friend Kevin O'Shea who will also be out and about in the field working with me on Team Gomez.

I know many of you have already had the chance to speak with Gabriel and learn about why he would be a great candidate to represent us in Washington. If you have not been able to connect with Gabriel yet, please let us know how we can set up a meeting or call soon.

I would like to ask for your help, as we are making every effort during the next few weeks to send Gabriel all over the Commonwealth to meet our Republican town and city committees, and all-star GOP activists. Please email myself or Kevin to alert us to any committee meetings, regional events or other opportunities in your districts, and either Gabriel or a representative of his campaign will be happy to attend.

We will also be announcing a schedule of events for the campaign kick off on Thursday, February 28th. I will send details so that you may share the details of the day's events with your town committees and others who would like to meet Gabriel.

Of course, myself and Kevin are always available should you have any further questions or concerns. Please do not hesitate to reach out. We are eager to hit the campaign trail and work with you over the coming weeks and months.

On behalf of Gabriel and the entire Gomez campaign, thank you for all that you do to support and grow our party.

Best,

Kayla Berube

Nice, But Is It Too Little Too Late? (5.00 / 1)
Brock

I am heartened that he has people starting to reach out to the State Committee.  However, it is the 23rd of February and he has missed out on a whole week of activities while Winslow has been traveling all over the state and Sullivan's people have been very busy working on signatures and developing relationships for their candidate.

I know I am only one person, but I have heard from Winslow and/or his supporters almost every day these last two weeks and Sullivan has been only a little less behind.  I have received an email from Gomez, but I am actually a bit perplexed by that since I had never given him my email as I had Wins,ow and Sullivan.  I have heard that he has the MassVictory list which would make sense as I am on that, but I would be unhappy if the MassGOP or some similar entity, e.g. massVictory, had shared my email address.  If true, I will not be sharing my email with the State Party or similar organizations going forward.  I hope e State Committee is able to look into this and see if MassVictory has really shared email lists.

Thanks for the update and I look forward to hearing more about Mr Gomez as I will give him the benefit of the doubt and an opportunity t change my mind as we head towards 4/30
