By excluding GOProud, CPAC is making a big mistake

by: Karl Marx

Mon Feb 25, 2013 at 22:52:53 PM EST

Daniel Foster at National Review Online makes an excellent case for inviting GOProud back to this year's big CPAC confab. Who would have imagined that National Review would be more ecumenical than CPAC? Did last year's display of libertarianism send chills down CPAC? The Democrats carried three of every four gay votes, votes as Foster notes could have made a difference in swing states like New Hampshire.

Read the whole article. It's rather enlightening and depressing at the same time.

Never Been (4.50 / 2)
Despite always wanting to, I've never been to CPAC and while my views are likely 180 degrees opposite GOProud, my preference tends to be to allow the broad spectrum to be represented and then rise or fall upon the merits of their own arguments.

In an event full of (social?) conservatives, I would expect that GOProud to be likely to fall but that's a better way to operate than muzzling them and making virtual martyrs of an entire organization.  Ironically, empowering rather than defeating them for views alternative to those of the conference.

Locally, in Reverse (5.00 / 1)
An infamous local example, in reverse, was when a recently past MassGOP State Convention allegedly locked out pro-life organizations while clearly allowing pro-abortion groups access to the Convention's lobby.

I'm pro-life, I didn't want to talk to or take the pro-abortion Republican literature and I certainly was outraged at the rumor that pro-life Republicans were locked out and denied access.

Well, to be fair & honest... I don't likely agree with GOProud  as a traditionally minded conservative Republican but I just don't like the idea of people being locked out.  As I said above, let their arguments succeed or fail in the arena of ideas.  I know I was gravely offended at the talk of those who I agree with being treated similarly here in the Commonwealth by our own Party.

Is excluding Chris Christie... (0.00 / 1)
...a mistake?

I don't know enough about CPAC to comment. But I will anyway. (0.00 / 0)
It would seem wrong for them to not allow the man to "attend".  But if this is about not asking the man to be a guest speaker????? Shoot.  Sometimes you're just not picked that's life.  Is Christie bitching about this?

I think MSNBC (0.00 / 0)
had a story claiing Christie was being excluded. However, there was another story that spoke to an organizer of CPAC which said the speaker list had not been finalized and there was still a chance he could be invited. Basically, the liberal media is doing what they always do, trying to make conservatives look bad. Christie himself has not said a word about this, but his friends in the media who will only be his friends until he runs for President (paging Sen. McCain) are pushing this.

I mean to put (0.00 / 0)
claiming. sorry for the typo.

That's what I thought ... (0.00 / 0)
Chris Christie isn't bitching but MSNBC is ... gee

And Festus is picking up on the story go figure.

You all want to feel better...blame the liberal MSNBC... (0.00 / 0)
...but the story I linked to was from ABC.  And here is a Politico quoting a CPAC spokesperson saying Christie was not a GOP All-Star and that's why he wasn't invited, whereas Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney and the usual suspects are.

Blaming the "liberal media" is just sticking your head in the same, pretending everything is OK.  It's like a 3 yr old's blankee, you can't get through the day without it.  Lame.

Relevance ? (0.00 / 0)
KM's comment here is right on.  I don't know what the "activist" thinking on this is, but the "nativist" (i.e. anti-immigrant) and homophobic strand in the conservative movement is headed straight for the dust bin of history.  Regardless of who prefer to sleep with, the government is "doing" us all the same way. (I'm sorry if I offend anyone.)
