All Three GOP Senate Candidates Make Ballot

by: Paul R. Ferro

Wed Feb 27, 2013 at 18:07:17 PM EST

All three Republican Party candidates for U.S. Senate are claiming they have the required signatures to get onto the statewide ballot for the April 30, 2013 Republican Primary.

Dan Winslow tweeted:

Dan Winslow ‏@danwinslow
It's official! @TeamWinslow has comfortably passed the 10,000 certified signature mark. On GOP Primary ballot 4/30. Great work all! #masen

Meanwhile, Gabriel Gomez, who the rumor mill claims paid $8-$14 per signature to get ballot status, has sent out an email announcing a campaign announcement tour across Massachusetts.

I am excited to officially kick-off my campaign for U.S. Senate this Thursday, February 28th.

I'll be honest - I'm not a politician. I'm a first generation American, and I was honored to serve our country as a U.S. Navy SEAL. I'm a husband, a proud father of four, and I'm a new kind of Republican.

Out of touch career politicians in Washington won't solve our crushing debt crisis.  We need new ideas.

That's why I'm running to serve as the next United States Senator from Massachusetts. This Thursday, we're officially kicking off our campaign with stops in Quincy, Shrewsbury and West Springfield.

Finally, Michael Sullivan, who was the last candidate to start collecting signatures, and relied solely on volunteers, announced he has made the ballot.

ABINGTON, Mass. (AP) - Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan says he has enough signatures to be on the Republican ballot for U.S. Senate in Massachusetts.

Sullivan delivered a batch of signatures to Abington Town Hall on Wednesday and said he had between 23,000 and 27,000. He needs 10,000 certified signatures to be placed on the primary ballot.

Sullivan said he was excited to submit that many signatures after starting his all-volunteer signature-gathering effort 12 days ago. Sullivan said his volunteers' ability to gather so many signatures in less than two weeks shows he has a ''groundswell of support.''

Let's all give ourselves a pat on the back that three GOP candidates got 10,000 certified signatures (nearly 80,000  total raw signatures gathered) in less than three weeks.

Strap in, kiddies, the next two months are gonna be fun!

How great is this? (5.00 / 3)
From David Bernstein at The Phoenix:
http://blog.thephoenix.com/BLO...

Sullivan retains the style and poise of a politician; unfortunately, he also seems to retain the Massachusetts GOP mindset from at least 20 years ago, if not more. He unapologetically calls himself pro-life, and opposed to same-sex marriage. He is also still in favor of the death penalty, and in response to my questions expressed no regret over seeking the execution of gang members, in cases that went badly awry for the prosecution. (Which I wrote about here, and here, and probably elsewhere; there's also a Phoenix editorial here, and here.)

When was the last time we had an unapologetically prolife state wide candidate?  Mike Sullivan may lose, but I'll take losing with Sullivan over losing with Brown any day.

And as I said on twitter... (0.00 / 0)
This paragraph by Bernstein is a great primary endorsement.  Even a decent general election endorsement.  What do recent polls say about the death penalty?  I find it hard to imagine that it hurts him at all.

Bite your tongue ..... (0.00 / 0)
Why the h**l do you start out by talking about losing ?!  If you'd rather lose with someone, anyone, then why even have a campaign ?

$8-$14 ... a signature? (5.00 / 1)

If he'll pay that much just for signatures... (5.00 / 2)
how much will he pay for votes?

All the whining is hilarious. (5.00 / 1)
We have three solid candidates on the ballot. This allows for an honest and open debate that can bring up the name recognition of all three and even though winning is unlikely can still help them in the future. Let's let all three make their case and end up with three quality future candidates.

Great Job Everyone! (0.00 / 0)
When Scott Brown dropped out at the last moment it looked like we might have no candidate. Now we have a primary with real candidates.

While the primaries could divide us, let's use the process to come together.

PS

I am really impressed by Sullivan's operation (5.00 / 2)
The guy had volunteers (!) collect 25k signatures in three weeks, almost all during crappy, snowy weather. In my opinion, that alone has made him the lead candidate in this race.

30,000 Raw signatures collected, over 20,000 already certified. (5.00 / 1)
I've had to update the raw signature total in this post four times because Sullivan's numbers keep changing upwards.
