Gabriel Gomez has issues!

(Gomez issues - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

Someone on twitter linked to a statement from Kerry Healey, but the link is to a dev site.  Check it out, Gabriel Gomez has an issues page.
http://dev.gomezforma.com.php5...

Update: Site is now down.  Was able to piece it together from cache.

Update 2: Official site w/ issues page is now live.
http://www.gomezforma.com/issues/

Fiscal Responsibility

Washington, DC has a spending problem. The Federal government has become a bloated organization with no budget, and runs at an annual loss. Today, we are $16 trillion in debt.  Meanwhile, career politicians on both sides of the aisle continue to kick the can down the road and print more money.  We recently raised taxes on the wealthy, and on every worker in America with the payroll tax hike.  It is time now to reach across the aisle and work together to enact meaningful spending reductions in a fair and equitable way, without hurting our military preparedness.

Entitlement Reform

Our nation's entitlement programs are on the path to insolvency. To save these programs, we need bipartisan action now. For many of our mothers and fathers, Social Security is an important lifeline. We cannot risk losing this essential program because of inacton or complacency. Political leaders in Washington should have the courage to commit to reforming these programs, without engaging in disingenuous and shameless scare tactics designed to scar our seniors.

Immigration

My parents immigrated to the United States from Colombia in 1964, searching for the American Dream. America is the most compassionate and giving country in the world.  Legal immigration is a great benefit to this country. We must we come those who want to work hard, and want to become law abiding Americans.   Immigration exemplifies the dysfunction in Washington. It is time to stop the partisan bickering, and for Congress and the President to work together to enact a bipartisan solution this year.  Serious immigration reform starts with securing our borders. Illegal immigrants with criminal records should be deported.  We must also seek to increase legal immigration. America must not educate the world in our universities, while forcing them out of the country to produce economic benefits in other countries.  Most undocumented workers are hard workers who contribute to our economy. It is time to bring illegal immigrants or undocumented workers out of the shadows, and offer an opportunity to obtain legal status, even citizenship, if are willing to pursue it.

Second Amendment

As a former U.S. Navy SEAL, I am a strong Second Amendment supporter.  Our freedoms make America the most unique and prosperous country in the world. The President and the Congress must act now forge consensus and compromise to close the gun show loophole, and to keep weapons out of the hands of the mentally ill.  We must not, however, take away freedom for law-abiding citizens in the process.

Life Issues

I am a proud Catholic, and pro-life.  But Roe v Wade is settled law and I have no interest in trying to change that. Politicians spend way too much time on divisive issues that are already decided and far too little time on fixing our economy.

Marriage

I oppose discrimination of any kind. Same sex couples should be free to marry.

Climate Change

Climate change is real. However, while science says climate change is real, addressing the problem must be done rationally. Unfortunately, many solutions offered by politicians in Washington are not rational, and would put America at a competitive disadvantage.  We need a serious energy agenda that promotes private sector innovation in both the United States and in other countries around the world.

Energy Independence

I will work with President Obama when he is right, and will oppose him when he is wrong.  The Obama administration is wrong in stopping the Keystone pipeline, a project that will create jobs, drive down our energy costs, and help us to become energy independent.

Healthcare

Access to quality, affordable healthcare is a goal on which both sides of the political aisle can agree. So-called solutions like Obamacare only address part of the problem, while ignoring or compounding the underlying costs of health care.  States should be free to design their own programs, just as we did here in Massachusetts.

Foreign Policy

As a former NAVY Seal, I know how essential it is for freedom here and around the world that America maintains a strong national defense. We need to preserve our ability to stand up for our allies and protect ourselves.  America has no closer ally than Israel, and we must work together not only to ensure Israel's security but also to promote freedom and encourage peace throughout the Middle East. I support a two-state solution that is negotiated by the parties and includes defensible borders for Israel. I recognize Israel's right to defend itself from the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran and I believe the United States should take whatever steps are necessary to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons. We must confront the real threats to freedom and we must sustain the readiness we need to protect our security and sustain the cause of liberty.

Now that could be taken at least a couple different ways....

Nothing about the economy (0.00 / 0)
Safe and forgettable.
Anything about prices? The middle class?

How about elderly and disabled people - Marriage (0.00 / 0)
If an elderly couple are dating and get married they will lose benefits.  Same for someone who is disabled.

How do you propose to help them?

Sounds like you should talk to a Democrat about that. (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
They shouldn't get married for money though (0.00 / 0)
Something tells me there are lots of elderly widows and divorced people getting married just to maximize how much they can squeeze out of the government pensions and survivor benefits and not have to pay inheritance taxes. But OK there shouldn't be a cost if they want to marry, either.

[ Parent ]
marriage (0.00 / 0)
if they get married they lose benefits, so they are not getting married.  Why would I get married to lose 1/2 of my ssi or ssdi?  Why are the elderly not allowed to spend the rest of their days in bliss with the one they love.

And why if you are disabled do you lose benefits if you get married.  I'm sorry love is grand but keeping a roof over ones head, and paying the bills is better.

I'd rather live in SIN than not be able to pay the doctor!

I keep getting (5.00 / 3)
emails from his campaign telling me how he's going to be a "different type of Republican"......with a whole lot of "I'm going to work together with the Demcorats" insinuated.

Dude...if you wanna work with Democrats, go be one.

They only have one interest in mind...screwing me from behind.  If you wanna hold me down so it's easier for them,  you can pound sand.

"I acknowledge having racist and classist and sexist feelings of white male superiority." -John Howard

DING DING DING DING DING (5.00 / 1)
We have a winner!

Working with Democrats has gotten us in this mess. Making them work with us is the only way to get us out of it.

We need to make the political climate one in which, to steal a line from Milton Friedman, the way you solve things is by making it politically profitable for the wrong people to do the right thing.

G.O.P. Growth. Opportunity. Prosperity. For all Americans.

[ Parent ]
If you believe that (0.00 / 0)
than you are the reason we are in this mess. A lack of commonense and a strong ability to compromise and lead is what got us into this mess. We're a broken party because of you, not people like Gomez.

[ Parent ]
What mess are you talking about...? (0.00 / 0)
The mess that started with the Great Recession?  I don't want to hijack the post and go down the rat hole of who and what caused the recession...but what "mess" was caused by working with Dems (and please don't say the trillion plus deficits, which clearly are part of the recession.)

[ Parent ]
Apparently I wasn't clear. (0.00 / 0)
For 100 years America has been living with a Progressive government. Whether it was controlled by true Progressives or the welfare state they created was administered by Republican placeholders. Instead of rolling back the regulatory welfare state, and fighting a rearguard action against the disintegration of tradition American culture, elected Republicans (for the most part) were content with "managing the decline" of America. Compromise, in this instance, means capitulation. And it's what Obama means when he says he wants a balanced approach to solving our fiscal problems. He wants Republicans to capitulate.

Check out this graph from the Heritage Foundation. No matter which party is in control, the federal government keeps on growing. As I said before, working with Democrats has gotten us in this mess. Fiscally, we must start framing the argument in a way that forces the wrong people (Democrats) to do the right thing. Managing the decline (ie. working with Democrats) is a recipe for the end of America.

So you are advocating a rollback of progressive laws... (0.00 / 0)
...and bring us back to 1890?  Is that what you believe?

[ Parent ]
We must work with Democrats (0.00 / 0)
So... Democrats control the white house and a solid majority of the Senate. I guess we can send men like Senator Cruz there to yell at everyone and accomplish nothing.

I figure that we have about six more years to either correct the ruinous course we are on, or the country will head toward bankruptcy. We need to make deals involving the Democrats as we won't have all three branches of government and 60 seats in the senate in the near future.

Someone has to be able to shape the deals we make, then vote for those deals. There is no Republican-only way out of this mess. I wish there were. But that's a fantasy.

Work with or Pander? (5.00 / 1)
Do Republicans have to work with Republicans, well yes our elected officials - by the very definition - must "work with" Democrats.

That doesn't mean that Republicans, be they elected or activist, have to pander or kowtow to Democrats.

Republicans need to provide viable alternatives.  We need to be the opposition party in the Senate & to the Presidency.  We can't simply be Yes Men grateful for the scraps from the king's table.

Our Party has lost its sense of educating the voter and persuading them to our principles, values, and policy.  Rather, we've engaged in some strange electoral calculus of trying to cobble together enough slices to put together a 50% +1 victory.

You can win a victory but lose a movement.  Don't campaign for today but educate for a future paradigm shift.

[ Parent ]
Stopping bad policy from becoming law (5.00 / 1)
IS accomplishing something. Especially when Republicans only control one half of one branch of our government. Compromising on bad policy still leaves us with bad policy that could have been worse. That is no way to govern.

A winning platform; Sullivan is DOA (0.00 / 0)
All -

First, I have always been a huge supporter of Representative Winslow, whom I had the honor of meeting last night in person. (What a guy!)

However, I am thrilled to see Mr. Gomez put out a platform that can win. His could gain 51% of a statewide vote.

As for Mr. Sullivan, he appears to be a great man. However, his platform is a non-starter. As a social conservative, I wish that it were possible for a general election candidate for a statewide race to be against abortion and gay marriage, but it is 2013, and there is overwhelming support in this state for both, and it is no longer possible to run against them and win. Even Steve Lynch was forced to abandon his pro-life past, and if he can't do it, the way some Democrats have been allowed, being against abortion rights is officially over in this state. Think can you name the last statewide office-holder who was pro-life on either side? I can't.

So I view Mr. Sullivan as a protest candidacy that does not acknowledge reality. I realize my fellow social conservative friends will scream at me. I don't care. I live in reality. I want a Republican senator who isn't socially conservative when the alternative is someone like Ed Markey who will try to make NARAL happy, which is an awful thing.

Will Gomez's pro-life-but-for-Roe work? I have no idea. I certainly hope so. There needs to be a middle ground and I hope he finds a way.

In general, I hope Gomez's stance on these things is something he doesn't talk about, but just takes them off the table so we can talk about his positions on spending and entitlement reform. THAT is the battle we need to fight.

Life but for Roe? (5.00 / 3)
Anyone who wants to see me & Ed go at it this morning over my cup of coffee & bowl of oatmeal can read our exchange on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ed.ly...

That said, what the bloody Hell does "pro-life-but-for-Roe" actually mean?  If someone is pro-life then supporting Roe is a non-starter.  Is that supposed to be "anti-slavery-but-for-Emancipation"?  Maybe so since Lincoln's Proclamation was meaningless in the actual Union states that still had slaves.  How about "anti-slavery-but-for-13th-Amendment"?!  Sorry, it just doesn't make any sense for me but then again, I'm a pro-life Catholic & socially conservative Republican here in Massachusetts so by some mathematics it doesn't matter if I understand it.

When I read Gomez's issue statement I found it lacking (tunnel vision on only Israel in the Foreign Policy statement without the broader Middle East, War on Terror, China, etc. - an area where as an ex-Navy SEAL he should excel) and virtually insulting as a traditionally minded Massachusetts resident.  Yes, I made my views known to members of his campaign in an attempt to provide constructive criticism.

I don't agree with Winslow's social libertarianism either and that's in part why I'm more comfortable with Michael Sullivan - who has a stellar political resume and life experience.  I love having him in the State House.

Lynch?  A jello-spined coward who was a social conservative of convenience who cracked under the pressure of a horrible electoral calculus.  He, and politicians of any party like him, who so horribly flip flop and/or disingenuously hide their true values & principles insult the voters.  Those candidates aren't prioritizing their issues, they're not maximizing their potential electability but they're trying to pull one over on the people.

What should be DOA is anti-conservative prejudice from within the Republican Party.  I'll support whoever wins the primary in full embrace of Reagan's 80% Rule but my primary choice has to be, if for no other reason (and there are many  more) than the courage of his convictions in the face of prejudice is Michael Sullivan.

What should be DOA is anti-conservative prejudice from within the Republican Party.

Amen, amen, amen!

Maybe I'm the one who is nuts, but we've been trying what people like edfactor is selling for YEARS.  Wasn't Bill Weld EXACTLY the kind of "republican" that the edfactor contingent want?

How'd that work out for you?

I'm not sure what "there needs to be a middle ground" means when it comes to killing babies.

How one can evaluate Dan Winslow, Gabriel Gomez and Michael Sullivan and come away with Sullivan "as a protest candidacy that does not acknowledge reality" is beyond me.

ES has it right:

They only have one interest in mind...screwing me from behind.  If you wanna hold me down so it's easier for them,  you can pound sand.

Somone please explain to me.... (0.00 / 0)
because I wasn't living in MA at the time, but in 1990 anti-abortion candidate Stephen Pierce won a supermajority at the convention, yet pro-abortion Bill Weld went on to defeat him decisively in the primary, and then won the governorship.

What exactly happened there, and isn't anyone thinking that the same forces aren't still out there in the electorate?

I don't have a horse in this race yet (and I haven't seen how the candidates will present themselves, which will be key), but it seems even within the Republican party that there must be many pro-abortion folks out there.

Perhaps I'm wrong, and that the decline of the party from 1990 levels to now, and almost everyone that is left is anti-abortion.

[ Parent ]
A good campaign vs a bad one... (0.00 / 0)
Weld's win was not ideologically driven.  Pierce sat on his lead and Weld spent big money on TV and by the time Pierce understood he was in trouble, it was to late.  Good campaigns bet bad ones.

Also, 1990 was far less polarized than today.  Do you think for a second that anti-abortion advocate John Silber could win a Democratic primary today?

BTW, can you guess who I voted for in the Silber / Weld race?

[ Parent ]
In all fairness... (0.00 / 0)
the Weld years were reasonably successful. That aside though, I agree that Gomez sounds like the same kind of candidate the establishment has been forcing upon us for some time. There is nothing "protest candidacy" about Sullivan from what I see. He has my full support.

[ Parent ]
How'd that work out for you? (0.00 / 0)
The GOP did control the Governor's office for the next 12 years.

[ Parent ]
I want a politician who will stand up for what he believes in. (0.00 / 0)
What is right is right and what is wrong is wrong.  If Gomez says he is Pro Life, then he should stand up for his convictions. He should not say that since Roe vs. Wade is settled law, that he has no interest in changing it.  If you believe abortion is right, then you should support it. If you believe it is killing, then you should do everything you can to stop it, not concede.

This is not meant to be a debate on abortion. The point is that a politician to stand up for his beliefs, whatever they happen to be.

Brief Conversation (0.00 / 0)
I had the occasion to have a brief conversation with Gabriel Gomez this morning and I enjoyed meeting him.  I had played phone tag with Gomez all last week and eventually gave up after I decided to support Michael Sullivan.  I figured there was no need to have an awkward conversation after I reached out to him but I certainly welcomed his reaching out to me & having an honest conversation.

My talk today with Gomez was all too brief but he invited me to bounce any questions off of him, especially when there was time after the speaking program.  I didn't actually have much of an opportunity but I enjoyed our brief chat.

I also enjoyed Gomez's speech & style, that is rather laid back & informal.  It didn't work for some people, for sure, but after having spoken with him several minutes prior it worked well with me.

I will say that Gabriel Gomez was the only candidate of the three to actually try to reach out to me.  I met Michael Sullivan for the first time today upon the bus going up to Danvers.  Dan Winslow is like Sullivan, someone I know of rather than know.  I think this was the first time that I've met Winslow, as I shook hands with him after he spoke and just before balloting began.  Of all the legislators, he's probably among the ones I know the least.

I favor Michael Sullivan for his extensive resume and our agreement on a wide swath of issues.  I enjoyed Winslow's forceful presentation today but Gomez's stock rose for me with his personal style.

I look forward to a spirited campaign by three excellent candidates, and to get to know each one much, much more over the coming months.

Which part of the problem does ObamaCare address?? (0.00 / 0)
First of all, giving money to Obama basically discredits anything said about fiscal responsibility.

But reading between the lines, I see a fiscal moderate, not a fiscal conservative (regardless of social views).  His ObamaCare platform sounds like the one pushed by Romney. And that was a joke. By saying what he said, he is implying that it works here, or that it could work here. Does he believe in the economics of RomneyCare (or ObamaCare)?  It seems like he does. But again, I would like to know his opinion of how it has worked here and also which part of ObamaCare he things addresses which part of the problem. Is there any element of it that he would keep??

On entitlement reform - we have a problem? Gee thanks! So your solution is to reach across the aisle and work with Democrats?  Come on - how about some bold policy positions to address a major problem?

Perhaps the fact that we have seen millions voting themselves into complete dependence on a tyrant has made our generation understand that to choose one's government is not necessarily to secure freedom.

He needs to oppose same-sex marriage (0.00 / 0)
Hopefully during the debates the candidates can agree that same-sex couples should not be approved to procreate together using stem cell derived gametes or third party gametes, and agree that all people have a right to make children and marry but only with someone of the other sex, and agree that Civil Unions that don't have conception rights are a better way to help same-sex couples in committed relationships.

The two extreme positions of opposing Civil Unions or supporting same-sex marriage and procreation rights are both too extreme. The electorate wants some common sense, not craziness. Let's make Markey take the transgenderism, same-sex procreation, marriage-doesn't-approve-of-procreation-even-for-a-man-and-woman position, because that is NOT popular.
