Breaking News: David Trumbull (R) to run for Third Suffolk Special Election

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Wed Mar 11, 2009 at 17:58:48 PM EDT

Last night David Trumbull (R-Boston) announced his plans to run for the Third Suffolk Representative seat recently vacated by Sal Dimasi.  David is a resident of the North End and a tireless Republican activist. In my conversations with David over the years, I have always considered him a brilliant and articulate mind.

Tonight I received a message from David outlining his next steps.  That email is shown below.

Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno :: Breaking News: David Trumbull (R) to run for Third Suffolk Special Election
WHY AM I RUNNING?

We need an alternative voice on Beacon Hill. The Republican Caucus in the House (and the GOP caucus in the Senate as well) do an excellent job of articulating alternatives to the free-spending, taxing, and self-dealing ways of the majority party, but in order to move major beneficial legislation (and to stop damaging legislation that enjoys the support of the current majority) we need more Republican votes in the House.

Here in my own district major decisions such how to carry out needed repairs to Storrow Drive without unduly disrupting access to the Esplanade -- one of Boston's premiere venues for arts, entertainment, and recreation as well as a major tourist destination cradled between the Charles River and a residential neighbor -- and to do it in a timely and cost effective manner are not decisions I want to leave to the same Democratic majority in the State House that brought us the Big Dig!

Recently, within blocks of the State House, a Beacon Hill resident was robbed on the street by a roaming armed gang of thugs who are still at large and presumed to be operating in the area. Public safety is concern in every neighborhood of the Third Suffolk District.

Public confidence in the State Legislature is low and with each new revelation of another sweet-heart pension deal for a politically-connected worker, another proposal to raise yet another tax, and another federal corruption indictment confidence plummets.

WE NEED AN ALTERNATIVE VOICE ON BEACON HILL.

WHAT DO I EXPECT TO ACCOMPLISH?

I expect to win. Historically special elections have been significantly more favorable to Republicans in this Commonwealth than have the regularly scheduled elections. The seat is now open due to the resignation, under a cloud, of the former Democratic incumbent. There are already four Democrats in the race -- whoever wins that primary will be badly bruised and at least some supporters of losing Democratic candidates will fail to fall in line and support the winner. There is also an un-enrolled (independent) candidate, so we are looking at a likely three-way race in the final election. None of the candidates have held office before and none can claim more name recognition than I. In the compressed calendar of a special election I can win this race.

Let's get going!

Here are some stats I compiled earlier on (0.00 / 0)
http://redmassgroup.com/showCo...

There are around 31,500 Voters in this district. 23,500 Are Active, and only 18,000 bothered to come out and vote for the Messiah-Obama.

Where are the other 13,000 Voters that didnt show up, or the 7,300 Alone in the North End and Chinatown?

I imagine some must be disenfranchised NOT Left of Center Voters. If some how one could get the normal R-Voters in this district, and get out a couple thousands voters from the inactives that may be persuadable, with the low turnout levels that this district consistently posts, one could concievably win. The turnout in '08 was 56%. I can't imagine what a dinky Urban Special election is going to pull, what 20%? That about 7,000 Votes! McCain pulled 3,600. Thats more than 50% of that, and with the Lefty Independent Candidate, I doubt the Pubbie would need that much.

Hey, Cao pulled out a win in a low turnout Special Election in Black New Orleans. Why Can't Trumbull?

That being said, If I were Trumbull, I would campaign exclusively in Ward 3. That includes the North End and Chinatown. McCain pulled 2,800 of his votes there. In fact, with a Republican campaigning in the South End part of the district, Trumbull would do more harm than good, he'd probably remind the Pro-Gay Marriage, Anti-Conservative, Anti-Traditional Values, 100% Hard-Core Radical-Liberal voters of the South End portion of the district to get out and vote against the Republican.

Still, I think there is A Chance, should EVERY thing go his way, and that he runs a truly MASTERFUL campaign, that he can win.
