Remembering Brian Kinney

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Tue Sep 11, 2007 at 16:57:34 PM EDT

(As I do every year on 9/11 I am promoting this story I wrote on the first 9/11 that Red Mass Group was in existence.  Brian every day that goes by you are sorely missed, by me, by my classmates at Franco American SchoolBy those of us who graduated with you at the University of Massachusetts Lowell, by those you touched for so many years as the happy gas pump jockey at your dad's gas station, by your mother, father and brother Tim, and most importantly by your lovely wife Allison. We all remember and all fully believe that you are at peace with our creator.  Until we meet again at the Pearly Gates Brian. - promoted by Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno)

In Massachusetts there are thousands upon thousands of people that knew a victim in the 9/11 attacks.  I'm no different.  On 9/12 I picked up the Lowell Sun at the Real Estate office that I worked at the time and almost fell to the floor when I saw a picture of my grade school and college friend Brian Kinney, you see he was on the United Air Lines Flight that flew into WTC 1 on 9/11/01.

What amazes me about the 9/11 attacks are all the good people that died that day.  It's true what Billy Joel says in Brian's case, "only the good die young".  Brian lived his life every day bringing joy to other people.  It was this way from when we were in grade school at the Franco American in Lowell and when we went to College together at UMass Lowell.  Brian always had a kind word to say to everybody.

Brian's dad owns Kinney's service station in Lowell.  Brian started helping out at that station when we were in 3rd grade. He was always there after school doing his homework and washing a window here and there.  While he was in college he was always there as well.  Working long hours to help his dad out while balancing school work.  I used to bring my beat up college mobiles it seemed every week to the garage to get fixed.  We often joked that I was paying his college fund.  Through his work at the gas station he was known to a great many people in Lowell as a friendly face to cheer you up.

After college even though he had a very good job at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, Brian was at the gas station every Saturday Morning helping out his dad.  Because that's the person that Brian was.  About two weeks before 9/11 we were talking about how we never hung out anymore and that I should stop by his house for a cookout.  Well I never got to go to that cookout.

There are multiple thousands of Brians and multiple thousands of stories like this. I just wanted to share my one.

Peter Hashem (5.00 / 1)
On this day, I can only think of fate and "there by the grace of God go I".  I used to travel like crazy in the years before and after 9/11, sometimes taking an 8 am flight to the West coast-LA or San Fran-from Logan and arriving at noon, giving me time to see a client or two in the afternoon.

I had an old friend from college, Peter Hashem, who apparently did the same thing, working for Teradyne.  I hadn't seen Peter for years, but he lived on my floor in college.  Peter was born in Lebanon and his family operated a dry cleaning store in Lawrence-if my memory is correct.  Peter was working on the American Dream, studying (working his ass off actually) to become an Electrical Engineer so he could earn a good living.  After 11 pm, Peter would stop studying and we'd do what lots of college kids did after 11pm…talked about how we would solve all the world's problems.  We did this many, many times.

I can't help but think that 25 years ago, our two guardian angles were setting above us, talking about our futures and ones says to the other, "You know these two guys will take the same paths, yet not at the same time." And the other says, "Your right.  They'll travel on the same planes, going to the same place, for the same reason-business.  But for one it will end tragically"

On 9/11 Peter took that flight to LA and I did not.  RIP Peter, Brian and all wonderful souls lost.

And we are (5.00 / 1)
richer for having you here -- to tell us that story.

Seriously.

2 from Dartmouth (0.00 / 0)
My hometown of Dartmouth had 2 murders due to the terrorist attacks 8 years ago today.  One was the sister of a classmate of mine from Mrs. Letterman's kindergarten class in Job S. Gidley Elementary School through our Dartmouth High School graduation in 1996.  She worked in one of the World Trade Center towers.

The other death was a priest from the Holy Cross Fathers who lived at the residence on Tucker Road.  The priest was a passenger aboard a hijacked flight from Boston.

I knew Brian Kinney as well, having done business with his dad and uncle for years. (0.00 / 0)
He was a great kid as is his whole family.

Here is another story that still shakes me to this day.  Another guy I knew who was in the same business, not to far from Kinney's station.  When I went in to see him two days later, he was in a daze. I commented how sad a day it was to have lost so many people like Brian , as well as John Ogonowski. He looked at me, still in a daze and mummbled " yeah it is".

We talked for a while and he seemed really upset. I asked if he was ok and he commented "I am now but it could have been very different ".

You see, he was booked on that same flight with his girlfriend on their way to Hawaii. They had an issue and had to cancel their vacation at the last minute - the day before.

Another was a friend who called his friend who worked in the towers only to find out he was wading through jet fuel to get out of the building. He was one who made it.

There are countless stories on that day
I don't know why these things have to happen but they do. We can only pray for their souls and the people they have left behind.

Thanks for sharing your stories as it does help us all remember the good memories of those lost that tragic day.
