Why No Big Headline About Tisei?

by: Festus Garvey

Sat Nov 21, 2009 at 11:00:08 AM EST

So yesterday we officially learned about one of the worst kept "secrets" in Massachusetts politics:  That Senate Minority Leader Tisei is gay.  Yes, this was widely known and was properly discussed yesterday within the political context of whether by officially coming out, that it sends a strong signal that Baker wants him for LG and they needed to get that house keeping item out of the way.

The reason for my post, is to compare the tame response of this widely known "secret", with the way RMG posters handled another widely known "secret" about Sen. Stan Rosenberg  I commend the posters in the Rosenberg diary who called into question why the diary was written in the first place.  But I think it's important to compare how RMG's editors treat two identical situations through the lenses of blind political partisanship.

I have to agree with the political analysis in the LG post that speculates that Tisei as LG must be a "done deal" because he came out yesterday (and I also agree with others that Polito is a smarter political move).

What I find most interesting is the solid rumor about another Republican who wants to run for Auditor (not Mary C) and also has one of those "worst kept secrets."

There is a real possibility that the Republicans will have two statewide candidates who are openly gay and another, who's brother had one of the first gay marriages in Massachusetts.  For someone like me, all well and good.  But for many in the Republican Party--it's like finger nails scratching a chalk board.

Y'know, Festus - you need to READ what you link to. (0.00 / 0)

The comments - from RMG regulars - all said, "So what?"  The article was posted - with no editorial comment - in response to a news article the Senator wrote for his newspaper which was also featured in the Globe and Herald.

So to try to expose RMG as evil homophobic hypocrites really doesn't fly - if you READ what you link to.

BUT - you wanted a big headline? So we could have another string of comments saying, "So what?" Thank you for taking care of that for us.

You know Peter, if you want to undermine my point... (0.00 / 0)
...you really need to read my post, because I wrote, "I commend the posters in the Rosenberg diary who called into question why the diary was written in the first place."  My point stands...Stan's declaration got much more attention here than Tisei...just say'n.

It wll be a headline after he gets picked. (0.00 / 0)
Monday? Hard to ignore it then.

Uh... (0.00 / 0)
I didn't write about it because I don't care...either that or I was busy when the story broke. (I was in New York for Business and didn't hear about it till I got home.)

I am not a partisan hack and my posts reflect that.

Tisei is gay. So what?

...isn't DD4RP an "editor"?   Yes, this is not your style...

[ Parent ]
Honestly? It just doesn't matter to me. (0.00 / 0)
Seriously, the subject line says it all.  Sen. Richard Tisei's sexual orientation doesn't matter to me.  That's his personal choice & preference and well, God bless him.

Richard Tisei knows where I stand on social issues.  We've talked & even joked a bit about it - rather recently.  Tisei knows that I'm far to the right of him on the marriage issue.  I've never made that a secret.  I wager I'm far to the right of him on other social issues as well.

Now, does that matter to me.  Well, yes.  When I believe that Sen. Tisei is wrong on an issue then I have no compunction on letting him know.  This goes the same for Brad Jones, any other legislator, Chariman Jennifer Nassour, or my friends here on RMG.

The difference here is simple, social issues matter to me - greatly.  That's no shocking surprise or secret.  I have & will continue to work to advance conservatism, including social conservatism, here within the MassGOP & the Commonwealth.  I believe that such a campaign will be a long, hard slog that will most likely be done through an incremental battle for hearts & minds (maybe a few prayers, as well).

Yes, I may disagree with Tisei on some issues and I agree with him on very many more.  I respect his positions and I believe that he respects mine.  I have absolutely no desire to purge anyone from the MassGOP.  I will not let the perfect become the enemy of the good and I will not go out in search of enemies to destroy.

Maybe this conservative has a libertarian streak in me but but what anyone does behind closed doors is their own damn business.  What they do in the State House, well that's another.

I haven't a clue as to if Charlie Baker will pick Richard Tisei for Lt. Gov.  I will say that that Tisei's "worst kept secret" doesn't, personally, matter to me, politically, one damn bit.  Richard Tisei may not be perfect but he is good and using Ronald Reagan's 80% rule, he's certainly a not an enemy but an ally & friend.

...my point has nothing to do with Sen Tesei, but the different treatment DD4RP gives to public officials.

[ Parent ]
I'll tell you why (0.00 / 0)
When I did that Rosenberg Post I really thought nothing of it.  Sen. Rosenberg put it in the paper, it was local political news, so I did a 3 line post about it.  It was political news here in Massachusetts, so I just put it up.

I then had to spend the rest of the day dealing with headaches and bellyaching over a post I just didn't care all that much about and it wasn't worth it.  When a similar situation happened here with Tisei I just didn't bother.

...your behavior tells us everything...one set of rules for people you like, another for people you don't like.  You can explain away it all you want, but you're behavior is front and center and speaks far more louder than your words.

I don't know (0.00 / 0)
I'm thinking there may be way to much thought put into this.

Is it not a natural response for anyone to not repeat something they caught grief over previously?  If you look at the previous thread it sounds like the reaction and ensuing discussion was a bit of surprise making him think "We'll maybe that wasn't such a good idea"...then presented with a similar situation decided...."Nah, not worth it".  If I said/did something and then had 5 or 6 people jump at me, I might think twice before I said/did similar in future....seems pretty straightforward in given the circumstances.

You are on crack (0.00 / 0)
and obviously haven't been paying attention to my treatment of Tisei.  I have been more critical of him than anyone else on this site.  This is the first time I've ever been accused of giving unfair treatment to Tisei because I like him.  That's crazy.  Here is a sample:
http://redmassgroup.com/showCo...
The average Democrat is much more conservative than Tisei.  If I could close my eyes and point to the name of a random Democrat of a list from voter vault I would do it in a second.

People note from the district just think "Well this guy is some hlaf-a-loaf Republican that people on the right aren't satisfied with."  This is not the case.

He bashes Romney and Conservative and praises Deval and liverals.  He pressures GOP candidates for office to be as liberal as possible.  He hurts the party.

I wouldn't support Cynthia Mckinney if she put the letter (R) next to her name.  I wouldn't support Barney Frank if he put the letter (R) next to his name.  I won't support Tisei.

Tisei has to go.

http://redmassgroup.com/showCo...
This guy doesn't even support teh income tax rollback.  The Gov't needs the money more.  I would rather have a registered Dem as most of them are more conservative than Tisei.  At least then, the new GOP leadership will disagree with Gov. Deval rather than kiss his rectum.  Tisei hurts Republican causes.

http://redmassgroup.com/showCo...
I'd rather see a magic 8-ball be minority leader than Tisei. At least with the 8-ball it might agree with me on something just through blind luck.

I'd rather have an actual loose cannon be minority leader than Tisei.  At least with an actual loose cannon it might take some shots at the Liberal Democrats up on Beacon Hill.

I've answered your question honestly.  You can either accept the truth or not.

one set of rules for people you like, another for people you don't like. (0.00 / 0)
That was your point?  That's I'm treating Tisei differently because I like him?  Clearly that is not the case.  You have no point.

Here's how much I like Tisei:
http://www.redmassgroup.com/sh...

You can absolutely be a principled conservative Republican and support gay marriage.  I agree.

On our leadership on beacon hill we don't throw the term RINO around based on a singular issue.  It is based on every issue.

I voted for Weld, Cellucci and many other Republicans that are liberal on social issues. I consider them all to fit the Republican profile and am glad to have them in our party.  They all supported cutting taxes, cutting spending, and balancing our budget.  Our current leader does not.

I am more than willing to accept Republicans with whom I disagree on some issues as they are almost always better than the alternative in the Democratic Party.  Tisei is not.

All I need is an excuse to vote for a Republican and they will have my support.  Tisei gives us nothing but and up-and-down liberal voting record.  Moreover, as the leader of the party he is supposed to speak for us.  He does not.

Tisei's constant praise for Governor Deval and his actions as co-conspirator for their liberal agenda makes it much harder for other Republicans to get elected.  Wacky left-wing policies are now touted as "bipartisan."  As a result, moderate and conservative Republicans seem more out of the mainstream.  Our state party finds it increasingly more difficult to raise money as conservatives find little or no reason to donate.

For these reasons and more I call Tisei a RINO.  I believe our Party and our Commonwealth would be better off with him gone, even if the seat goes to a Democrat.  However, I do not believe it definitely would.

I lived in his district for 20 years and my family is still there.  Republicans can and do win there.  One of the reasons Tisei has shrinking victory margins is because many conservatives I know in the district now refuse to vote for him.  Some leave it blank.  Some have even crossed over to get rid of him.

Tisei has got to go.

When I read the headline, I thought it was going to be something bad, like, Tisei coming out as a Freemason.  Now THAT would be troubling.

Where did 'WE' officially learn this? (0.00 / 0)
I heard it in an offhand remark from a early morning news host, but I did not read about it anywhere in newspapers or print.  So where was it 'officially' released?

I actually heard it from VB, the 'not-nearly-as-funny-or-as-smart-as-he-thinks' news guy on the local FOX station.  I didn't think it was appropriate that he incorporate it into a discussion since it wasn't widely known.

In an interview with the Globe yesterday Tisei publicly disclosed that he is gay, in anticipation of scrutiny that would come with a statewide candidacy.
"I was asked and gave an honest answer. I don't think anybody cares about someone's personal life, it's not a big deal," he told the Daily Item

Tisei, who is thought to be the leading candidate, is an only-in-Massachusetts character: a Republican leader who publicly disclosed yesterday that he is gay.
