In a stunning display of fiscal mismanagement, Tsongas is less than $20K up on Ogonowski in Cash

by: Rob "EaBo Clipper" Eno

Fri Oct 05, 2007 at 00:31:36 AM EDT

In what can only be described as a stunning display of fiscal mismanagement, despite outraising Jim Ogonowski by abot $1.4M dollars in total, Niki Tsongas only has $19K more cash on hand than Jim as of 9/26/07.  Without a $50,000 loan to her campaign she would have $30K less than Jim Ogonowski.  No wonder she brought the big guns in and nationally democrats have been scrambling for money.

What has this got her? 5 points up with two weeks to go.  You need to give as much time and money as you can to this effort.  No wonder our liberal friends are going bezerk.

Niki's Numbers

Total Raised - $1,886,849
Total Spent - $1,675,141
Total Cash on Hand - $240,708

Jim's Numbers [http://query.nictusa...]

Total Raised - $434,121
Total Spent - $204,458
Total Cash on Hand - $221,119

You really.... (0.00 / 0)
....need to stop making things up based on these numbers.  You state:

Niki Tsongas only has $19K more cash on hand than Jim as of 9/26/07

....which these numbers do not indicate.  What these numbers indicate is that as of 9/26/07 Tsongas had accounted for expeditures in the amount listed, not that she necessarily had actually spent the money yet.  You also characterize this as:

a stunning display of fiscal mismanagement

....which again is a inference you are drawing that you can't support with the information you have at your disposal.  If the money was spent on bagels, that would be mismanagment, but if the money was spent on tv, radio and print space (which would not necessarily have been utilized as of the accounting date) and on phone banks and on direct mailings it isn't.

Also, you are now quoting conjectural information about Tsongas' internal polls (even though you are historically dubious about internal polls when they don't work in your favor) as though it is an undisputed fact.

You will note in this comment and the very few that I have made regarding this contest that I have not been advocating for Tsongas.  In the first place I don't live in the district, and in the second, I could really not care less who wins.  Neither candidate, in my estimation, stands any chance of making any difference either in the small picture or the big picture.  So please do not dismiss me as a drooling liberal drone, because it is simply not true.  My only issue is that you are making stuff up and it is not only disingenous, but potentially harmful to your candidate if your misstatements get attached to him.  I'd cut it out if I were you.

There is a field that says: Cash on hand

That field means what the candidates have left in the bank as of 9/26/07.  That is what the field means.  I don't make up the accounting number the FEC does.

I suggest you look at the details of the numbers.  She has spent no money post primary on non-fundraising mail and or media buys in these numbers my friend. I just looked it up.

She has spent $1.6 million to jims $200,000 and is in reported accounts tied with Jim.  I don't know, when I buy an investment I like to see a return.  There is no return here.

Without Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi's $150K and $75K raised respectively and her own $50k loan Niki would be close to bankrupt with 2 weeks left in the race.

This explains why the MassDem party had to do a mailing for her, she didn't have the money.  Looking at her salary commitments a lot of this money is tied up in salaries going towards the end as well.

No hyperbole here, just good old fashioned facts.

Again.... (0.00 / 0)
.....you can't support your statements.  There was a lot of money spent on media the usage of which you don't know about from these numbers, just because you spend the money pre-primary doesn't mean that it was all used pre-primary.  Your statements are pure hyperbole.

Second, campaigns aren't financial investments, they are in fact the opposite of an investment, so that is a silly statement.  I would be more concerned about a candidate who hadn't spent the money at their disposal.

At the end of the day, all you can say is that Tsongas has been spending the money she has raised and that on the reporting day her accounted cash balance was a certain number.  All inferences therefrom are purely conjectural, period.  Even your statement about the MassDems mailing is silly.  Campaigns use volunteer service for this sort of thing all the time, even when they aren't broke, don't they?

I'm getting woozy from your spin (0.00 / 0)
Shulty,

Cash on hand is a time honored measurement of campaign health at any point in time.

the facts are Niki overspent to win the primary and has been unable without Washington help to raise money since.  You spend media buy money as you use it. It's the way these things work.  She spent $535K pre-primary on broadcast television the reach of which was 95% outside the district.  That is not a good use of money, when targeted cable television advertisement would have given her more bang for the buck inside the district.

It's plain it's simple.

You are wrong... (0.00 / 0)
....about media buys.  They are cheaper in bulk.  A candidate with the cash on hand can purchase more media that they need during the primary with the bulk savings and have it on hand if they win or donate it to the winner if they loose.  You have no idea if that happened in this case.

It's not plain and simple.  It is YOUR spin.

And.... (0.00 / 0)
....apropos if my above statement, I just saw a Tsongas ad on WCVB.  Wherever did she get the money for that??? Or maybe she paid for it four weeks ago?  Do you know the answer?

No, you don't.

[ Parent ]
Just how much did she have to pay? (0.00 / 0)
to get Bill Clinton to come speak for her?

Maybe she can pay ALGore to come in and talk about his Global Warming tale.. I hear he only charges $500,000.00.

Fiscal mismanagement or a Primary Contest...? (0.00 / 0)
You are funny Eabo or just really desperate...comparing the expenses of a candidate that just had a major primary fight with a candidate that had a very easy primary.

As I said in my last post about this race, your spinning is juvenile.  Maybe that's because your candidate has no meat on his bones and when the SCHIP's are down, you ahve to attack your opponent with made up stuff that flies in the face of reality.  Like this silly mismanagement stuff.

I do have to thank the O-man for finally giving Niki an issue that she can hang him (and not Bush/Rove) out to dry on.  Opposing the expansion of health insurance for children based on a falsehood (illegal immigrants are allowed to receive insurance) falls right into line with the "mean Republican" narrative that independents will accept.  I'm so grateful for that present, I'm tempted to contribute to Jim, but instead, give him a pat on the back from me.

Tsongas and her TV AD's (0.00 / 0)
Why does Niki Tsongas in her recent TV ad's say she will stop the war in Iraq? Why does she lie to the people in your district. She can't stop this war any better  that the rest of the Democrats. Congress can only try to stop the funding for this War in Iraq. Stopping the funding is the same as cutting off the monies our Brave Troops need to continue in their success in the fight against terrorism. WE, those of us who are retired for the military, label this as being Anti Troops. Jim is right by saying the troops will be  there for some time to come to help the Iraq people and their baby government. At least he is being honest, something Mrs  Tsongas should take a look at. With the Democratic Congress having only an 11% approval I hope the people in your district do not buy into the lying of  Tsongas in saying she will stop the War in Iraq. What will her next promise be, Stop the War on Terror? Wow! I would love to see her plan, since the War on Terrorism has only been going on since 1979. Jim should hammer her statements  and expose her for what she is !!!

Seriously.... (0.00 / 0)
...?????  You've got to be joking.  Is Mr. Ogonowski really in a position to make sure there is no immigration amnesty?  People running for congress promise to dedicate themselves to things that they, of course, individually, have no power to effect.  This is a particularly silly comment.
