I'm conservative, because I'm a bleeding heart liberal.

by: Renee

Sun Dec 30, 2007 at 20:28:10 PM EST

I'm pretty big on social justice issues, yet years ago as a self described liberal trying to explain to my peers that maybe their ideas could be more harmful then good their only response was that I was really a religious conservative. Eventually I took their advice and became one.

Two of my thoughts... on casinos and the break down of family in the inner city

Renee :: I'm conservative, because I'm a bleeding heart liberal.
On casinos

The main argument is that it will bring large amounts of revenue and jobs to the state, and I have issue with our government relying heavily on a form of business that is based on the sole objective of preying on desperate people by promoting them to give away their money for the small hope and very slim chance they might be financially better off.

When I spend five dollars for a lottery calendar for my daughter's tee-ball league or purchase raffle tickets, my main objective is to support the team or whatever charity I'm donating to. It's nice if I win a 25 dollars or a gift certificate, but I'm not hoping or placing much thought on winning. On the other hand, when I go to Foxwoods, I'm only going there in hopes of winning and taking more home then I brought into the casino.

It has been a few years since I've been to a casino and occasionally I buy a scratch ticket or two during the holidays or birthday, in my mind I'm not thinking or wanting to donate money to the state. The only thing I want is to win, I'm not thinking about the government and I doubt that many people are. We're only thinking about becoming a millionaire.

The whole casino debate has made me rethink how I spend my money, even if it is no more then a few dollars. When I gamble I first calculate how much I'm willing to lose, before I had a few children it would be no more then 50 dollars once a year, today I can't afford to lose any. For some people I know, they're so down on their luck that if they had twenty dollars in their pocket, impulsively rather then keeping it for groceries, they would think it is better to gamble it away. If they gamble it away, at least they have the 'chance' of paying all of their bills.

Think about how much money people will have to 'lose' for the state to 'win' when calculating how gambling affects Massachusetts?

I don't think I will ever gamble again. It's a waste.

Break down in the family in inner cities.

Currently I'm reading 'Come on People, on the path from victim to victors' by Bill Cosby and Alvin F. Poussaint M.D., it's a telling book on the issues of African Americans straight from their mouths. They aren't crying 'it's racism', and they don't want more government or affirmative action, they want to be able to take care of themselves and for that to happen they need to bring back men to be husbands and fathers. This reversal of the trend won't happen in the course of election cycle, it will take generations.

Where I live in Lowell, we don't have a large African American population, but we have a fatherless problem and children lacking stability in the home life through single parenthood and divorce.  The best it seems liberals have regarding the family is giving young girls birth control. Should we be encouraging a twelve year old girl who doesn't know her own dad and lived through a series of her mother's boyfriends that having sex with the boy two seats behind her and a row over will fulfill her emotional void? Doesn't she deserve better and know the truth in comprehensive sex education that sex is more then a physical act that is ok as long as she doesn't birth out a live baby herself? Why can't we tell her that sex really does have emotional repercussions and when a man and woman have sex they have to calculate the obligation to the potential life of the child and be educated in the context of mature relationships, not just sex as a teenager?

If you can't get a hold of the book, I borrowed mine from the public library, an interesting blog with multiple interest articles on African American conservatives is Booker Rising.

What exactly are your "bleeding heart liberal" positions?  You seem like a staunch conservative from the postings I've seen.

Also, can you elaborate on this "The best it seems liberals have regarding the family is giving young girls birth control." Last I heard, liberals were the ones advocating sex education, including concepts like esteem.  Maybe I missed something.

You did miss something (0.00 / 0)
Both versions of sex education don't work. Neither tell the whole story. I never learned the development of a fetus until I was married and pregnant, but I knew how to received anal sex at the age of 14. Not only did see a condom placed on a cucumber, I saw one place over a young man's head, despite the poor STD and pregnancy prevention rates.

Sex wasn't about relationships, it was about recreation. No one talks about sex in the concept of a stable monogamous relationships, where you don't actually need to think about STDs or really need much worry of your husband leaving you a non-planned pregnancy. Adult relationships with children have nothing to with 'me', 'me', 'me'. It's about sacrifice and they're not teaching that in sex eduction.

No one spoke of the emotional repercussions we felt, if you felt bad about sex or abortion, it was because of religious guilt. There actually a biological reason why women feel sad, because of released during sex and pregnancy that actually makes a women have a stronger attachment to men and her unborn child. From a physiological point of view it is not normal to hook up or terminate a pregnancy. I, myself a sexually active teenager, and known my peers who have hooked up, contracted STDs and had abortions we don't look at this time as empowering. We feel like fools.

My point is liberals don't have 'bleeding heart' positions, in fact they are very harmful to the well being of the community. In Black America, 70% of the children are born out of wed-lock and they have a higher rate of abortion and STDs including AIDs, despite there is a high number of 'health clinics' placed in these neighborhoods.

According to Bill Cosby and others like myself, we're sick of so-called liberals screwing with our lives. We're sick always having to the play this co-dependent relationships of being the victim for liberals to save us and be the hero from those mean bad "enemy de jour". We're sick of you priding yourselves as our savior. We're sick of being your bitch, and pimping us out.

We ask you to please stop.

Cosby speaks out a lot on playing the victim, but like myself he support public schools and libraries. All my children watch is PBS and we use the public library. I would use public schools if it wasn't for the disregard parental involvement. Cosby doesn't use terms like conservative or liberal. In regards to sex education, his goal in mind is teaching a child the whole concept of what "manhood" and "womanhood" means.

OK, now I'm really confused (0.00 / 0)
Last I checked, Massachusetts schools are not required to teach sex education and curriculum are left up to the local district. Even so, every curriculum I've ever heard of starts with egg and sperm and moves on to fetal development.  I've never heard of one covering anal sex, though. Where did you go to school?

My point is liberals don't have 'bleeding heart' positions, in fact they are very harmful to the well being of the community.

Are you saying you weren't actually a liberal?  I'm genuinely curious what liberal positions you held.

We're sick of you priding yourselves as our savior. We're sick of being your bitch, and pimping us out.

I'm not sure what I said which led to this response.  I'm almost certain Bill Cosby believes nothing of the sort.  How exactly are liberals pimping you out?

Denial? (0.00 / 0)
Bill Cosby wrote a book, it's available. Your choice to read it or not, but you can't be certain until you do.

Are you afraid to read what Bill Cosby really thinks? He talks about churches needed to be more active in the community, parents being the primary care givers, and men needed to step up being fathers and husbands.

I don't think anyone is against sex education. People just disagree with what and where should be taught. I think you proved my point about pimping, liberals assume only they and their policies really care. You made a reference that conservative don't want to teach sex education and that liberals care about self esteem. I see liberal policy stripping away community foundations, such as family, church, boy scouts as being unimportant and even harmful. It's like an abusive relationship, where the boyfriend convinces the woman that only he cares about her and no on else, then the woman is separate he takes advantage of the relationship.

While many conservatives believe believe in chasity rings, I do not. Just today, being 14 weeks pregnant with baby #4 I was telling my 3 year old son, how it is the daddy's job to cut the umbilical cord at birth, as he inquired about it in the ultra-sound I had of the baby. Sex is easy, humans have been doing it for years without a class. What's hard is relationships. Young children saw adult in functional relationships all the time, so they knew how to behave when they reached puberty, now we have educators tells us do whatever we want as long as we are using a condom.

Liberals don't care if you get pregnant, or whether or not there will be a daddy for the child or even keep the pregnancy. Liberals don't care if you get an STD and become infertile down the road. Liberal policy actually promotes it, because the more poor decisions young adults make, the more need for government programs to fix the problem with education and health services.

What is so bizarre about this conversation is that you don't care about the situations I'm talking about, all you care about is about what are my liberal positions. My point isn't about liberals or conservative, my point is about what does it mean to really care and if one had a bleeding heart, what would he or she do. You don't care about the 12 year old girl, the experiences of myself or my peers, or what Bill Cosby really thinks. You seem completely dismissive.

Anyways regarding anal sex.... and numerous other issues my sex education turned into a court case. The case is here

http://www.ca1.uscourts.gov/cg...

Ann Coulter also got a hold of the case for her book. Now I don't like Ann Coulter or her behavior, (she's vulgar and ruse) but she did hit this on the head.

I deserved better then what liberals had to served me. Everyone does.

Take care

Let's see (2.00 / 1)
The origin of "Bleeding Heart Liberal" can be traced to the "Bleeding Heart of Christ" the "Sacred Heart" which is revered in Catholicism.  Since Catholicism has a Social Justice component, which Renee has said she subscribes to she is reiterating that she is a "Bleeding Heart" or Catholic Liberal.  The Democratic party is fast losing it's once monopoly over Catholics due to it's "Socially Liberal" which are not the same as "Bleeding Heart Liberal" positions.

I hope this clears up any confusion for you.

Not really (0.00 / 0)
Although it does confirm my impression of you as pompous, not very honest, and kind of an asshole.
